grandiose and staggering: Cannes-winner Nuri Bilge Ceylan told in “hibernation” of a Turkish Patriarchs and pseudo-intellectuals who forces his family to the solidification.
fog blurs the outlines. The cooling capacity on rocks, grasses and houses. Winter is a time of retreat, but not necessarily a failure to act. Aydin operates in Cappadocia about the hotel “Othello,” but in the winter, only few tourists in the Central Anatolian region, famous for its cave architecture. The hotel is hard to do something. So Aydin made at the desk to hone his columns for a regional journal and maybe someday to write a history of the Turkish theater.
For Aydin was once an actor and not very successful in this profession. Now he lives with his wife and his divorced sister thanks to an inheritance well furnished and quiet on the “Othello” -Anwesen. Were it not for these sudden dips of violence to the contemplative life. A stone hits the windshield of Aydin car; almost there would have been a terrible accident. Why did the little boy thrown out of the village the stone? Why is Aydins wife so unhappy?
Aydin (Haluk Bilginer) is the central character in the film “hibernation” of Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who is named in his homeland NBC and of the you never saw an average work. For years, he is regarded as the main representative of the renaissance of Turkish cinema. His films are stories about the modern Turkish society at the intersection between the departure and paralysis, and they take their time: In a slow tempo and often beautiful images they tell of people and places. Ceylan, who is also successful as a photographer, has written the screenplay for “hibernation” with his wife Ebru. This film is crowned one of the most idiosyncratic cinematic work stories – and was honored to right the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Festival
In the context of social tensions performs a silent drama.. In “hibernation” not much is happening, it will not run, kick or large physical acts. But it happens all the more – with consequences for almost everyone involved. Only for non Aydin; he is a king in his little kingdom. Next to the hotel he owns quite a few houses in the village, whose inhabitants have to pay rent to him -. What they can not sometimes
It is a poor area. Aydin is itself a modern patriarch; but he is not kind. His alleged modernity knows no fairness. He thinks he knows everything about everything, and only his opinion is relevant.

More and more this man turns in conversations with his family at the dinner table or to the “subordinates” in the village as vain and conceited, power-hungry and -missbrauchender man. Aydin makes people small, by depriving them of the power of self-empowerment. Under the mask placed well opining it changes smoothly from the scholastic ranting a subtle insult and open denigration of others -. In all the dialogues that structure the film and put highlights
Banned follow as a spectator this sad farce on the understanding of the Aydins especially sensitive woman Nihal (Melisa Sözen) suffers; and his sister Necla know to exist only with verbal sharpness. Former expectations and acute disappointment paint a picture of what would be these women and what they are now. Man caught in a kind of hibernation
Ceylan refers to Chekhov as his greatest source of inspiration, and in the wake of the Russian poet is “hibernation” a breathtaking drama of hopeless for most of the characters conversation. Instead, as in Chekhov Moscow Istanbul serves as a utopian place of longing. Of course, he is never reached in 196 minutes, one of which – as unlikely as it may sound – no seems superfluous

In the epic gesture here is high political, the conflict between rich and poor negotiated. In Turkish means Aydin “intellectuals”, and certainly can Ceylan Portrait of a narcissistic pseudo-philosophers interpret as a symbol of the artist’s relationship to his environment, which employs this director again and again. The figure of Aydin said all those who stop by their development status. “Hibernation” is a relentless reflection on the relationship between ideals and obstruction of their implementation.
“The young people of Turkey, who have lost their lives last year” during the protests, Ceylan has dedicated his film.
