In the future European Capital of Culture Mons is shortly before the official start of the festival year 2015 built in the middle of downtown outdoor installation of the Flemish artist Arne Quinze has collapsed. The 85 meters long and 16 meters tall work was on Christmas Eve at a central location by parts and fell to the ground.
Because the existing structure of wooden slats pulls away like a giant branches over a road and pedestrian paths, it was considered very lucky that no one was injured. The affected road had to be closed, however.
Whether the work of art built in November with the name “The Passenger” until the official opening of the festival year on January 24, can be rebuilt, was initially unclear, as is the cause of the disaster. It was bewildered and have no idea how it could come to the collapse commented the festival management. All safety requirements have been complied with accordingly. The stability controls by the authorities had shown no problems, it said.
