Over from Sony Pictures: From Patriotism to the movies – Neue Zürcher Zeitung

The threats against Sony Pictures, the film “The Interview”, cinemas and cinema-goers have caused unexpected side effects. For the first time a film available online before it flickered hours later on the screen of a movie theater. This represents a break with past practice which protects cinema operators. Sony responded so surprising to the indignation against proposed to the company after it had withdrawn the film.

blessing for Independent

Sony could Google and Microsoft to win it, “The Interview” to give online and sell. At the same time, the company sent express disks to the movie theaters to those who were willing to show it. The large cinema chains in the country came out of the question. Thus, the hour of independent theater owners had struck. Some of them responded quickly to the offer from Sony. Therefore, the premiere of the film on Christmas Day found in more than 300 cinemas rather than – as originally planned

.

Hacker, who had entered in November in the computer system of the company , were – according to the FBI – in the pay of North Korea. They destroyed and stolen data on a large scale. At first it seemed as if the attack of the cyber-thieves more embarrassing as dangerous for Sony – and certainly a boon for gossip columns because the hackers published many e-mails with blunt comments about stars

This changed. quickly as threatened under the name Unknown Guardians of Peace with acts of terrorism in the style of September 2001, shortly before Christmas, should “The Interview” as provided in cinemas around 3000 premiere. Sony buckled and pulled back the movie. President Obama blamed the company and called the decision a mistake. Sony obviously had not expected that a yielding to the blackmailers would entail an enormous loss of image by itself.

gesture for Freedom

According to most critics, the film is not exactly a masterpiece. It is a comedy about disgruntled journalists who throw themselves into an adventure grateful, when the CIA them propose to assassinate North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong Un. North Korea had protested months ago against the film. The headquarters of Sony in Japan apparently took effect on its offshoot in Hollywood and insisted on certain changes and downturns.

At the end of the fickle film company did the right thing and gave “The Interview” unexpected but still free. She quickly opened a special website where you can download the movie. While Apple and Amazon were two grand in the Internet business with film and video, not on providing a Sony, but Microsoft and Google took the opportunity.

It was also a chance for the Google to promote underused movie service from Youtube. Access to the film is limited to American IP addresses and payment with American credit cards. However, Sony waived the usual premium for new movies and requires only around 6 dollars, the usual rate for works from the archive.

For many moviegoers, there was a patriotic duty equal to, or at least a demonstration for freedom of expression, is the same movie to watch on the day of the premiere. The cinemas showing the film was, were well attended and often fully booked. According to media reports, Sony had expected to take up to 25 million dollar on opening day in production costs of about 44 million dollars. Fox News reported on Friday morning, the income from performances in theaters and thanks to the rental internet would have exceeded $ 1 million.

The idea went anywhere without incident and in any case without the threatened apocalyptic terrorist attacks. The Xbox platform from Microsoft and Sony Play Station had big problems at Christmas, but they were not supposed to further attack the Guardians of Peace attributable.
