No, Black aka Colin Vearncombe was not a musical giant like David Bowie. But he was also more than “just” another one-hit wonder. With “Wonderful Life” he finally created one of the finest bittersweet hymns to life in general.

“I never liked that song,” says my colleague. And as much as I appreciate them otherwise, I think to myself: “You have probably one of the waffle.” Otherwise she finally has already Pippi in the eyes when Heidi and the Aim-Uncle arguing on the big screen, Howard Carpendale “Hello Again” whines or Stefan Raab is reading to his departure from a few Fipsi books. Hide you can because in “Wonderful Life” not be immediately dissolved into tears, and even have the impertinence to title the song as stupid?!?

No, no, no. Boardwalk, my love. And very thin ice. Who the 80s has also just kind mitgekriegt and in the right place at least some something like a heart, can not help but to fall in the song in melancholy. This applies even otherwise of course stahlharte, Stoic and dull guys like me. And guys who actually entirely are not available on so slimy-leaked types with Popper-Tolle, pleated pants, nerd-jacket and Jammer falsetto in his voice how singer Colin Vearncombe presented under the pseudonym Black at that time.

Suave? Well, okay!

Okay, he had not invented the look. The apparent opposition to be a pop star, and yet to give himself lifted-distinguished, before bands like Roxy Music, Spandau Ballet or Heaven had 17 successfully celebrated. And a group like Hurts – ironically with a song called “Wonderful Life” the breakthrough, without having been to supposedly inspired by Black – does so today. They, too, saw and we see the after, although strode even earlier perhaps more in leather jacket, ripped jeans and DocMartens through the area. Therefore: His appearance mid-80 Colin Vearncombe be forgiven, the effective power of “Wonderful Life” does not diminish. Even more so since the singer from pomades Pinscher rather walked in later years to Zausel with stubble.

Yes, Vearncombe fared like so many. Until the end he hoofed it over 30 years by the music business. But with “Wonderful Life” already succeeded shortly after beginning his career in 1987 only a big hit, with which it should always be connected. With “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, “Sweetest Smile” or “The Big One” also glückten him in immediate temporal environment still some minor chart success, to which, however, almost exclusively remember experts for useless knowledge.

It was not all bad

Nevertheless, “Wonderful Life” more than just a one-hit wonder of the brand “Ice, Ice, Baby”, “can not touch this” or ” Macarena “. Just everything earlier and even in the 80′s was not bad. With the text with some sarcasm and in tune presented with plenty of melancholy comment on the beauty of life Black created one of the most enchanting bittersweet hymns to life in general. The associated, realized by the commercial director Gerard de Thame music video went a long way, to underline the message. Recorded in a seaside resort in northwest England, in black and white, with slow camera movements, slow-motion effects and facial studies on lines like “Sun’s in your eyes, The Heat Is in your hair, They seem to hate you”, it was true as thoughtful as in 1987 from the Hupfdohlen clips of other ephemera of the brand Rick Astley, Mel & amp; Kim or Sabrina stood out.

Now this wonderful life has found just for Colin Vearncombe an abrupt and far too early end. In a car accident on January 10, he suffered a severe head injury. So hard that the doctors saw eventually forced to put him in an induced coma. Without success. On Tuesday, 16 days after the accident, the singer died with only 53 years with his family in the hospital. His wife and his three sons had sung goodbye for him, it says on the Facebook page of the native Liverpoolers. The post ends with the text line: “. No need to laugh or cry, it’s a wonderful, wonderful life” How true.
