The Nobel laureate in literature, Bob Dylan is not coming in December for the award ceremony in Stockholm. The US rock singer had canceled on Tuesday, by letter, informed the Swedish Academy on Wednesday.
“He wished he could take the price personally, but other commitments make that impossible. He stressed that he feels by the Nobel prize very honored." The Academy said that they respect the decision.
“the fact That a Nobel prize winner can not travel to Stockholm to receive the award, is unusual, but not exceptional,” wrote the Jury. Other prize winners would be canceled for a variety of reasons for the award ceremony – such as Doris Lessing, Harold Pinter and Elfriede Jelinek. The canadian Alice Munro, who received the award in 2013, had not been able to make the trip for health reasons.
Dylan had to get this year’s award in October as the first song writer for his poetic creations in the American song tradition awarded.
Within the Jury had not taken care of the rock singer in order for displeasure, that he volunteered after the award week in Stockholm. Until the end of October he had been assured by the Academy, the award “of course,” accept, and “to come” to the ceremony.
The price to stay with him in spite of his absence at the award ceremony on 10. December – Alfred Nobel’s death anniversary – awarded, said the Academy. Under one condition: “We are looking forward to Bob Dylan’s Nobel lecture, he is the only requirement – within six months from the 10. December 2016." Traditionally, the Nobel prize winners in the week before the ceremony, hold a Nobel speech.
For the price of a certificate – the so-called Nobel diploma, a medal and a document, on the allocation of eight million Swedish kronor (around 810 000 Euro) is indicated. The way Dylan medal and documents to get, was initially unclear.
