After David Wnendts “wetlands” arrived in the United States recently and was highly praised there a cult hit, is now Sönke Wortmann’s “lap prayers” continue the success story. Although these two Charlotte-Roche-bestseller adaptations arose almost simultaneously, “lap prayers” only comes now to the cinema, and although he naturally brings many similarities, the two films could not be more different.
Very simple lying alone already because they come from different “homes”. Behind “wetlands” with producer Peter Rommel was the longtime companion Andreas Dresen. And director David Wnendt also has a so exciting film like “warrior” is responsible. For “lap prayers”, however, the producer and screenwriter Oliver Berben is responsible and just the director who made “The superwoman”. That basically says it all, although “lap prayers” purely external not even make a bad figure: the occupation of Juliane Köhler Robert Gwisdek to Jürgen Vogel is coherent to boom, the look is elegant and tells the story even solid. The only problem is that it still feels never right.
in Charlotte Roches autobiographical novel tries to escape Elizabeth (Lavinia Wilson) of sadness. The mourning for her siblings who died in the journey to their wedding killed. She struggles with nightmares in which her literally, the soil is washed away under your feet. Plagues you with guilt, because at this tragic journey especially her wedding dress should be transported. And in their raging anger at this sleazy tabloid that has exploited this terrible accident and suffering on the front page. Only with their therapist (Köhler) they can talk everything from the soul, only their regular Testament changes she has everything under control, and only having sex with her husband (bird) they can forget everything – which is why they all maybe a little exaggerates.
Although sometimes leads to amusing moments behind it always puts the fear of losing the last vestiges of their “broken” world. It is often spoken extensively and pointedly about sex. And with her husband tried Elizabeth from so much like Puffbesuche. Curiously, but it goes on the canvas still pretty family and Sat.1 fit to the point and you literally feel like to be in the wrong movie. Now you might say it was because it is in the heart of the story not about sex, but about a woman who must find their way back to life, but it is probably more a matter of scaring anyone certainly.
The Leaning tone is the big, crucial and overarching flaw of “lap prayers”. Time he’s caricature times dud, sometimes heartbreaking tragedy, sometimes cry against yellow press voyeurism – and never does that one really to another. The transitions vote just as the balance. And not even the now famous especially by TV productions Lavinia Wilson, who has a certain resemblance to Charlotte Roche and visibly gives trouble really comes in this role, which is more than just a role, namely also Charlotte Roche’s personal fate of history.
Wortmann’s “lap prayers” played mannered, smart and quite clever, what is to be read in Roches novel of drama and hearty fare, developed but no independent narrative flow and will never own power. So you can not really sympathize or laugh with him and you do not get the idea out of your head that the film but actually exactly serving this Vo-yeurismus, he denounces so reproachfully when the terrible accident shows in his long flashback, of Elizabeth’s life tore to pieces
