Book adaptation “lap prayers” – Sex as a release? – Süddeutsche.de

By Rainer Gansera

Sönke Wortmann Charlotte Roches bestseller filmed “lap prayers”. It is a tedious web of trauma and therapy. A film that is desperately looking for the right tone.

No electric blankets? Where are the blankets? Charlotte Roche’s “lap prayers” novel begins with the electric blankets motif, in which once the two rows of pictures from Sex & amp; Disaster-mixed history ignite: “As always before having sex we both have electric blankets in bed half an hour before I dressed terribly afraid that such a thing begins to glow and I burn after falling asleep alive….” The “lap prayers” -Adaption by Sönke Wortmann (Director) and Oliver Berben (Book) brings the blankets until the very end to the game, where they appear as casual accessory – casual and inconsequential, like so much in this tedious web of trauma and therapy.

The film begins with a dream sequence in which the 33-year-old Elizabeth (Lavinia Wilson) has a fantastic fighting suit the rooms of a daily newspaper, armed with bombs – it’s kind of mad at the tabloids. Only you do not know exactly whether to be funny or dramatic now. It seems like a ridiculous self-staging of theater narrator

Sex passages reduced to a minimum

According to what tone investigated the film? He knows himself not as accurate. Skipped be the first thirty pages of the novel, in which Charlotte Roche with its typical obsessive detail painting describes the marital sex of Elizabeth and her brave husband Georg (with admirable restraint played by Jürgen Vogel).

Wortmann / have Berben reduces the sex passages of the novel to a minimum. They focus on the trauma: Eight years ago Elizabeth experienced the shock that her three brothers were killed in a terrible car accident. Since then she has weekly therapy sessions with Ms. Drescher (Juliane Köhler), which teaches her that “trauma is so painful because it is an open wound, it does not heal to.” In horror flashbacks the trauma is imaged consuming: the truck that pushes across from the opposite side of the road, the terrible fire at the accident; in slow motion the burned hands that cling to the steering wheel and be swept away.

There begins the story of an encounter with death, a supposed work of mourning that is lost in a strange way in a narrated with schnoddrigem youth jargon neuroses care. That the accident trauma autobiographical reference has (Charlotte Roche their brothers lost in a car accident), may not enroll from outside those serious tragedy, they gambled in their wise-cracking self-referentiality of history.

“I have more neuroses than other women shoes, “Elizabeth confesses cheerfully, and the film celebrates the neuroses in paralyzing detail: the desire for revenge against the” bloodthirsty “Tabloid, the paranoia, the guilt, the apocalyptic disaster fears

egocentrism flunkernder neuroses exploration

As gripping and credible work of mourning can be shown presently demonstrated, for example, RJ Cutler in his drama has just begun “If I stay”. The story of a seventeen-year-olds whose parents and brother died in a car accident. Here the trauma is translated into a moving tribute to the happy moments in life with the deceased. Here is mourning not in a egocentricity flunkernder neuroses exploration hang.

With all the reduction of the sex scenes of the novel, the film can not escape the Sextherapieprogramm the story yet. “Only during sex I forget all problems,” Elizabeth admits the therapist, and her husband inspires her: “Fuck me back to life” Sex as a release from the trauma? The sex that practiced the well-off couple in marriage hygienic purpose, can not even be a hint of such redemption. He proceeds as in a German sex films of the late 1960s: dildo purchase in a sex shop, brothel visit in order brisk Dreier – Apotheosis of a smugness that defines itself as mildew of ennui about the whole story

War. the film adaptation of Charlotte Roche’s megahit “wetlands” a diminutive of the novel, a kind of feminist post-feminist Pippi Longstocking adventures in the Ekelzonen the genital area, the “womb prayers” film version appears a year ago as helpless search for the tone in which could be told of death and trauma. But mixed sex comedy from the trauma and horror, an unfortunate cocktail of bad taste.
