“Bastille Day” with Idris Elba – Movie review: see and die Paris – SPIEGEL ONLINE

On a busy square in Paris, a bomb goes off. People die. Who is behind the attack? In the social media a stranger throws suspicion on Muslims, soon the hatred unloads on them in street battles. And in all the chaos expect the authorities with new attacks.

Sounds like a nightmare, before one is afraid in EM-times and so far, fortunately, did not materialize. Since it acts already calculating and cynical to start a thriller like “Bastille Day” with this plot right now.

On the other hand, a hire even now get the idea before, curl with the scenario of a terrorist attack in Paris at least some sensation Greedy to the movies. European and world championships are so sour cucumber times for movie theaters. Every two years, spoil the major events to launch the blockbuster season. Also in 2016 glue the potential moviegoers back front of the TV or hang around at the public viewing, while broad in cinemas gaping void.

However, the premise of the terrorist attack turns very quickly as a Trojan horse. “Bastille Day” is not really a terrorist thriller. The film was also already in October 2014 in production, even before the attacks in Paris.

Although the script uses initially quite the then already existing fear of terrorism, but remains diffuse. Whatever the film will not be a gloomy political thriller, but perfect Friday night entertainment, as its director James Watkins is quoted in the press release. However, offers on a Friday night in EM-times even a second-rate football match sometimes more excitement than this unsuccessful thriller attempt.

Who has now therefore detonated the bomb? Radical Islamists certainly not, nor the young Parisian Zoe (Charlotte Le Bon), who wears a politically motivated attack by the metropolis. Rather, it was the American pickpocket Michael (Richard Madden) – and also the only accidentally. Sounds a little complicated. It is also, it is finally a powerful conspiracy in this film.

Polished images, uninspired Action

The sinister backers use only Zoe, and Michael stumbles by chance in the conspiracy. The relationships are then but of CIA agent Sean Briar (Idris Elba) quickly and easily unraveled, so the trio can spend the rest of the film so that, waffenfuchtelnd and kalauernd rushing on manhunt through Paris.

One cock Thriller in the style of the seventies did he want to shoot, says James Watkins. We need to quote at this point a little more from the press release because it’s striking what the director with “Bastille Day” had before – and what the finished film then everything is not honored. Pretty much the entire Hall of Fame the thriller directors he calls out as role models on, Sam Fuller to Walter Hill. But not enough: “I wanted to make a film with an effective, dangerous voltage as in Sidney Lumet and William Friedkin’s films”

Is always good to emulate role models.. But where should hide all the influences in “Bastille Day” to Watkins’ mystery remains. The plot is cobbled together from stereotypes, see the polished pictures by studio, the bombastic action sequences are staged uninspired.

It should be the British quite some trust. Watkins’ thriller “Eden Lake” from 2008 with Michael Fassbender enjoys among fans cult status. The film is so bloody that he landed in Germany on the Index. That “Bastille Day” now never come close to the dreamed of Watkins level, has, so one can assume a lot to do with the producers. They would reportedly like to oblige the Frenchman Pierre Morel. The verbricht regularly Thriller-commerce as “96 Hours” and pimp his Euro-Trash with world stars like Liam Neeson on.

Although James Watkins therefore stepped in as a replacement for “Bastille Day” sees the film by Pierre Morel. And the actors switch to autopilot. Nothing remains of the charisma that Idris Elba in “Beasts Of No Nation” exuded as Warlord, and “Game of Thrones” star Richard Madden remains completely pale. In this bad form they have despite abundant explosions, car chases and shootouts no chance against 22 guys who chase on a sports field a ball
