The Metal band blind Guardian is active for over 30 years in the music business. Over 20 years ago they played for the first time at Wacken Open Air. Meanwhile, the musicians have become the master tape. FOCUS Online spoke with founding member and singer Hansi Kürsch about emotionality in metal, the uniqueness of the festival and the cohesion in difficult times.

The Heavy Metal Festival Wacken Open Air there since 1990. In the same year the German metal institution blind Guardian published their third album “Tales from the Twilight World”. The band from Krefeld played in 1992 for the first time in Wacken and grew to a certain extent with the Festival: Today it is one of Germany’s biggest bands in the metal business and performs on Friday night the line-up to headlining.

FOCUS Online : Blind Guardian played in 1992 for the first time at Wacken Open Air. Can you still remember it

Kürsch : I can even extremely well remember. At that time, however, no one expected that times something big is it. The festival then right here [in the Artist Village, on the old cow, Note. d. Red. ] occurred and there were so to the 1,500 visitors since. Our catering consisted of soup, a loaf of bread and one or two cases of beer, about the amount we fight today.

“It was a forest and meadow Festival”

FOCUS online: What has then identified for you as a band, the festival

Kürsch: We had no idea what to expect. It was just such a forest and meadow Festival the middle of nowhere. We went to our show home and have really made us any further thoughts about the festival. Holger and Thomas [the Wacken organizers, Note. d. Red. ] have called from time to time, but it has somehow never shown that we play here again. In 1998, we found ourselves on a well-established festival again, which had its limits but not yet achieved.

“The public is the real star”

FOCUS Online: Was there already foreseeable, why fans and musicians so happy to come back

Kürsch: Yes, definitely. The one noticed. By the time the festival had been this special energy, I meant just to the forest and meadow Festival. There is an extreme connection to the town and also to the festival itself, not only to the music. I think the enthusiasm has increased at all. Today one can really speak of a magic that comes from the audience. The audience is the real star of the festival

FOCUS Online:. Unlike other festivals

Kürsch: In any Case! You can login here before each stage questions and you’ll notice that each audience identified at that moment 100 percent with the band. That’s for us as musicians an extremely beautiful condition

“No trace of fear”

FOCUS Online:. You are touring around the world and have it some risky situations experienced. As the security situation feels currently at, you worry

Kürsch: I think just the cohesion at festivals like here in Wacken is the proof that we peacefully and can handle problems from the policy can remain outside. For bands, but also to the fans. When I was now on the festival grounds, it felt good. No trace of fear and less fun than in previous years.

FOCUS Online: Do you get after 30 years on stage still goose bumps when the fans your band hymn, the “Bard’s Song” sing

Kürsch: Full clear yes! That’s me everywhere, even if it is in Wacken on Friday evening will be something very special here again. Since then have suddenly bearded men with Viking helmets, the tears in his eyes.
