“The Fourth Estate” with Benno Fürmann on Arte: Thank you for compassion, NDR! – MIRROR ONLINE

This text first appeared at the premiere of “The Fourth Estate” at the Munich Film Festival in June.

Journalism and fatalism are almost become a pair of words in the past few years. The pads go back, the working conditions are precarious, many observers see the so-called fourth estate waver

A public service Politthriller now drives a couple of juicy dialogue scenes to bring the generally diagnosed media misery to the point.: in the NDR production “the fourth Estate” Benno Fürmann than running free reporter a scandal in Berlin political operation on the track; in several places it’s all about the relationship between change and research

So jubiliert a colleague considering first investigative work results. “. If this is really true, then you win so that all journalism awards” The dry answer of Freelancers: “A Permanent’d be enough.”

In another scene, the journalist tries ranzuwanzen on behalf of an online medium for the purpose of obtaining information on a young, unknown MPs; he pretends to want a portrait write about them. The press officer of the deputies is skeptical: “You need clicks Many clicks woman doctor Tiller is a newcomer that attracts so easily not behind the stove before…” So the press officer makes a media expert, smugly he pushes afterwards: “Is not that too feuilletonistisch for an online medium?”

Stark researched, highly compressed

and a scene full of sentimentality and sarcasm. The press officer explains to his boss, what kind of a journalist who wants there to talk to her: “He was a foreign correspondent in the German Financial Times, since the went bankrupt, he sits in Berlin and waiting for a permanent job.” “Must be bitter for him.” The politician compassionate Thank you for compassion, NDR!

The journalist in the film researched the case for a grand dame magazine called “The Republic” that “The Republic Online” has a successful digital offshoot named. Superficially recalls much of the SPIEGEL and SPIEGEL ONLINE. Not surprising Writer Jochen Bitzer and director Brigitte Bertele have editorial team paid visits to prepare the film. Bitzer has previously written, among other things, the heavily researched, Grimme winning abduction drama “The case Jakob von Metzler,” Bertele staged recently to relish compacted thriller Altered States “craving”

Stark researched, lustfully compressed. These are descriptions that also apply to “the fourth Estate”. It would be pointless and boring to list at this point, which is comparatively on the film and of course also invented. It’s a lot!

But the filmmakers succeed quite capture the mood in times of massive upheaval media using a conventional political thriller plots. This is indeed, according to the genre, overwrought immeasurably, but it is shown in the core aptly, as the currency of information is no longer in the old form to translate into earnings. Everyone pokes around here for new sources of revenue. Speaking two battered Editors says again: “When we highly jazzing this at a government crisis, we get new elections Bring us all back into the black.”

Despite the hype and simplifying the filmmakers draw pretty the schizophrenia after which inevitably also the most honorable publisher infects when it attempts to bring together in periods of declining Editions Search ethos and profitability. On Friday celebrating “The Fourth Estate” on Arte its television premiere in the fall of the film is shown in the ARD prime time.

The view of the above license fees hedged NDR to which privately resounding quality journalism is compassionate and even developed sympathy for the contemporary journalistic muddling through between new rigor and mature self-confidence. accrued to new high form, announces the Benno Fürmann pleasant ambivalent held Search bully on the question of where he left his motivation hernimmt in terribly bad payment: “I just rediscovered faith in the evil of the people.”

Also here know all the sacked and highly motivated reporters that enter with the ethos of the past and the payment of today their stories, in their hearts: “What good is a permanent position with a hand that can go every day bankrupt?” Comforting words that are a bit weiterwurschteln be in journalism.
