the jury of the 69th Locarno International film festival has decided: the Golden Leopard hits the socially critical crime “Godless” ( “Godless”), a Bulgarian-Danish-French production by director Ralitza Petrova (Bulgaria).

Actress Irena Ivanova was honored as best actress. She plays Gana, a geriatric nurse who sold identity cards of their patients on the black market. When she meets a new patient, likes music, she is beginning to change. She notes that it can have a high price, the “right thing” to do.

Also, German films were among the highlights of the festival that goes with the award ceremony at the end of the evening. The Romanian-German co-production “Scarred Hearts” directed by Radu Jew (Romania) about the life of the poet Max Blecher (1909-1938) received the Special Jury Prize – the most important ceremony for the Golden Leopard.

The jury, headed by Mexican director Arturo Ripstein has named the Portuguese João Pedro Rodrigues for his film “The ornithologist” for best director. The Austrian-Italian film essay “Mister Universo” (Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel) got a special mention. For best actor, the Jury Chooses the Poles Andrzej Seweryn for his interpretation of the painter Zdzislaw Beksinski in the Polish film “The last family”.

The hopes German filmmakers in the audience award not fulfilled. The feature films “Paula” and “Before the Dawn” were among the favorites, but viewers opted for a movie of the Englishman Ken Loach: “I, Daniel Blake”. The poignant story of a man apart from society had already won in May at the Cannes Festival Golden Palm.
