Critique of FILMSTARTS.de editorial The Neon Demon – film starts

4.0

From Carsten Baumgarden

Is this art or throw it away? This question arose already in Nicolas Winding Refn’s vorigem film, the ultra-violent revenge thriller “Only God Forgives”. The idiosyncratic Danish auteur has now developed by his international breakthrough with the action thriller masterpiece “Drive” a so great confidence that he sees himself as a brand and as such the acronym NWR used (as in the title sequence of the movie and in the press release .) It is probable that a work like realized “the Neon Demon” only with such a huge ego ever: NWRS latest extravagance is the optically furioseste film in recent years, hyper stylish durchkomponiert like a neon painting to excess Every single picture is! but the content of the dominant Dane has to oppose the heady and exuberant prior references images in his cool and raven horror thriller grotesque little more than a fairly simple proposition: LA and the modeling industry eat yourself!

The very pretty 16-year-old Jesse (Elle Fanning) travels alone and with big dreams in his luggage to Los Angeles to start a modeling career in the City of Angels. When she auditioning for agency boss Jan (Christian Hendricks), the course is set quickly, a shoot with celebrity photographer Jack (Desmond Harrington) brings Jesse career rolling. She befriends with the make-up artist Ruby (Jena Malone), while their model girlfriends Gigi (Bella Heathcote) and Sarah (Abbey Lee) they look rather than competition. The indigenous photographer Dean (Karl Glusman), meanwhile, tries to protect Jesse in this unforgiving city. The seedy motel manager Hank (Keanu Reeves) has the girl, however, on the binoculars and harassed them after they have brewed him trouble than a mountain lion holed up in her room. But Jesse’s rise in the industry is unstoppable …

Actually should play next film after “Only God Forgives” in Tokyo Nicolas Winding Refs. But against intervened his wife, the actress and filmmaker Liv Corfixen ( “My Life Directed By Nicolas Winding Refn”) because they did not want to live there for an extended period. As a compromise, the couple agreed to Los Angeles as a swivel and Handlungsort for “The Neon Demon”. But not only the venue is interchangeable, also the subject: the Model and fashion industry. Refn is not about to take the fashion world in an oblique satire on the grain, but the artificiality of the whole fashion circus is also too obvious, like his obsession with youth and its cult of beauty. Refn’s approach is bold: a horror film without horror, that it should be embedded in a world full of beauty. And so is “The Neon Demon” more abstract construct, and directorial finger exercise as a more stringent feature film. Refn is the big reference Ladle road and uses in numerous artistic sources, including Greek mythology (the legend of Narcissus), Italian Giallos of Mario Bava ( “Blood and Black Lace”) and Dario Argento ( “Suspiria”) and the Violence Studies of Chilean surrealist and Refn-mentor Alejandro Jodorowsky ( “El Topo”).

“The Neon Demon” is a style orgy in which all settings are composed beguiling without the action moves forward great. Refn comes over long sequences without dialogue, but when spoken, the information content is minimal. Often one gets while watching the feeling that the director of his Cliff Martinez ‘Electro Core always hypnotic umwaberten fever (alb) dream in slow motion run leaves – apparently without aiming. Only in the last film thirds is indicated something like a direction when suddenly all hell L.A. falls and burst dams of blood. “The Neon Demon” here developed an irresistible punch a überkandidelten grotesque and Refn garnished his neon-red madness with incomparably terrifying necrophiliac sex scene. Finally, then manifested the eponymous neon demon and down the stretch celebrates the filmmaker turns his striking brutality that was present only in painful needle sticks before.

With the experienced young star Elle Fanning ( “Super 8″, “Trumbo”) has found the perfect projection screen for his bloody March Nicolas Winding Refn. The naturalness that gives Fanning her Jesse, distinguishes this babe in the woods of their artificially beautiful tuned competitors as Bella Heathcote ( “Dark Shadows”) and Abbey Lee ( “Mad Max: Fury Road”) embody. The punchline of the film says Alessandro Nivola as star designer: “Beauty is not everything. ! It’s the only thing “Beauty is here more than anything – and Jesse is unspoiled and unsophisticated. Therefore, the newcomer is also envied by all, this is true even for the excellent Jena Malone ( “The Hunger Games – Mockingjay”) obscure as Jesse’s girlfriend, Ruby. “Matrix” icon Keanu Reeves, meanwhile, has a lot of fun to excessive Refn trip and sets an appropriately bright Aufritt out as bad-tempered Motel manager.

Conclusion: Nicolas Winding Refn’s surreal-grotesque LA fantasy “The Neon Demon” is a glossy superficial Horror Show in visual perfection

We have “The Neon Demon” in. seen framework of the 69th film Festival of Cannes, where the film was shown in competition.
