the South Korean writer Han Kang won with her novel the Vegetarian ( “the vegetarian”) this year’s Man Booker International Prize , The 45-year-old received the British literary award on Monday at a ceremony at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

is the award Endowed with 50,000 pounds (about 64,000 euros). Han, the prize money is shared with their 28 years old English translator Deborah Smith. Han was the first South Korean author who was nominated for the awarded since 2005 price.

The Vegetarian tells the story of a Korean who chooses to eat meat, with devastating consequences for them. Jury chairman Boyd Tonkin commented Hans Buch combine “tenderness and terror” in a story full of “volcanic (…) intensity”. The jury praised the “moving and suggestive” novel “surprised by the depth of his strangeness”. It is the first novel of the author, which was translated into English.

The Man Booker International Prize is one of the most important literary awards in Britain. As a counterpart to the British Booker Prize he distinguishes foreign works that are translated into English. Among the nominees was among others the Roman A whole life of the Austrian writer Robert Seethaler. So far, the jury recognized with this award, the entire career of authors; this year they each recognizes a single work of fiction.
