“Toni Erdmann” laughed tears and a bit creeped – ZEIT ONLINE

is there at home, where the Telefonschränkchen is on the board and the plastic chairs are stacked on the terrace. It is left at some point behind. As Ines Conradi (Sandra Hüller) in Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann . Ines is now successfully as a business consultant in Bucharest and soon Shanghai and looks only watch for a stopover in Remchingen with her father (Peter Simonischek). You deserve much own money and toils hard for her career, meet in the evening even with boards of large companies on a drink in the hope that they will be the next customer. Cannes – “Toni Erdmann” (detail)

in her third feature film has the filmmaker Maren Ade zurückgegruselt in that sense, the parents have raised in one, as no one was in the school festival at the table their joke funny. To escape this oppressive mixture of shame and helplessness after the Exodus, likes talking to themselves that they had nothing in common with their own parents except random genes. Friends, it is then, were the important relationships. Or, as in the life of Ines, just colleagues or clients. About this modern hallucination Ade bows with her philanthropic and delightfully funny look and unravels: Bucharest or not, the pattern is knitted after Ines, comes from Remchingen.

The film was already before its premiere a huge success for Ade. With him she has managed to bring any of their previous films in a world-class competition: The wood for the trees was at the 2005 Sundance Festival, where he received the Special Jury Prize. All other that examined our problems with traditional role models, was in 2009 in the Berlinale competition and brought Ade the Grand Jury Prize and its lead actress Birgit Minichmayr a Silver Bear one.

It is the easy way, complex issues to negotiate, which are characterized Ades movies. How Minichmayr and her film partner Lars Eidinger in All other were arguing as pretty normal couple and loved, bared and entblödeten, was just not banal or even boring, though one knows it only too well, but adorable, adorably funny and very smart.

Ade selects the locations carefully. In All other it was the House of the parents in Sardinia, in the seclusion swell the conflicts and finally were able to break through the encounter with another couple. This time she has shifted the location of the action to Bucharest. As an image of how far Ines believes are away from their parents’ home. However Ade shows little of the city, no views, but only insignificant places like Ines’ apartment, shopping centers and restaurants. So they form the perfect backdrop to fully concentrate on the confrontation of Ines and her father can. Finally, to which it comes, as the slightly imbecile music teachers visited surprisingly with a strong penchant for bizarre disguise his daughter.

In each of her films also autobiographical insert says Ade. She was born in Karlsruhe in 1976, her parents were also teachers. At 21 she went to study in Munich, founded her own production company accomplices film and eventually moved to Berlin, where she lives today. It did they care about how little she could come off while her family. Such relationships are established, ritualized interactions. If you’re younger, it is believed the origin have no influence on the present existence. That is what unmasks Ade as grandiose error. And because it is not the type of whining, Maren Ade may have thought: we laugh about it better.
