to the Macedonian border.
In August 2015, hundreds of refugees are pushing at the Greek-Macedonian border. Police keep an angry crowd back with shields. Amidst the chaos are lost two young children separated from their parents, look around crying. In their faces reflects despair. For this shot, the photographer Georgi Licovski by the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF has the price of the “Photo of the Year”.
“The photo is a snapshot, which also holds Europe’s dilemma and Europe’s responsibility,” explained Daniela Schadt, Patroness of UNICEF Germany, on Thursday in Berlin the jury’s decision. “It is a moving, intelligent and incredibly strong image,” she said.

Among the other laureates include the Swede Magnus Wennman, the sleeping child refugees along the Balkan route and photographed in the Middle East. The third prize went to American photographer Heidi Levine. Your picture shows a man with an amputated arm and scarred torso. Beside him stands his five year old son, also heavily scarred. With bombing raids on the Gaza Strip, the mother and four siblings of the boys had been killed, the liver itself had to be removed. More images that received an honorable mention, showed Swedish fathers in parental leave, war victims from Darfur and child labor in Afghanistan.
