“I’m off”: film by Hape Kerkeling-bestseller, the criticism – SPIEGEL ONLINE

Is it possible to a mega-bestseller unverfilmt? The most successful non-fiction book of the German post-war period, that nearly five million copies sold and 100 weeks at number 1 of the SPIEGEL-list? A tome, which still plays this summer in Spain, hence must produce photo wallpaper-like images?

No, such a book one may not seem unverfilmt leave, at least when one considers the market economy, as did the producers around Nico Hofmann (“Germany 83″) are. And so comes nine years after the release of Hape Kerkeling “I’m off” its search for meaning in the cinema. Finally it must be said, because originally should this happen five years ago. That the film now starts precisely on Christmas Eve, but divine (marketing) is certainly no coincidence, coincidence. Hans-Peter Kerkeling is 36 years old, has just experienced some hearing and the removal of the gallbladder overcome when he breaks up in summer 2001 to its 769 km long walk from the French Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the Spanish town of Santiago de Compostela.

director Julia von Heinz shows at the beginning of their adaptation an impressive bloated Striesow including double chin and handsome Plauze, the on stage only to fly the heart, then disappear the senses – and the doctor prescribed weeks of strict rest after the collapse. Soon, it is no longer enough Kerkeling to inhale in the domestic favorite sofa one cigarette after another while stroking the cat. So on to the Pyrenees!

clergy for your pocket

In the ensuing pilgrimage history of film interspersed repeatedly flashbacks from Kerkelings youth a, kidnap in the Ruhr in the late seventies. The audience learns how the boy from Recklinghausen early loses his mother, at the Catholic “Omma Bertha” grows (usual hemdsärmelig: Katharina Thalbach) and soon shines after initial difficulties in cabaret competitions, including the age of 19 end up in television.

Kerkelings travelogue itself, the called the mirror is a “enlightenment epic”, meanwhile, provides clergy for your pocket. Many questions are asked is, some answers. Quite a few have to do with God and the search for meaning. There are all sorts of humorous anecdotes from the road, with lots of Spiritual. Here have songs on the radio through its texts the right way, people meet on miraculous fateful way again – and at the end of each stage is Kerkeling “Finding of the day”. The then goes something like “Open your heart and knutsche the day!” or “Do what life requires of you!”. Often the vegetable stock for the soul is: warm, but a bit thin

Incoherent Poesiealbum Sayings

The film then poured broth now again with water to.. Because the substance is only apparently for a cinematic presentation. Of course, he provides pictures from the travel brochure, fantastically beautiful and sun flooded with light. But something deeper level of the book, all those pains, doubts, self-surveys Kerkelings degenerated in the 90 minutes to completely incoherent Poesiealbum sayings. Where half a page or more is devoted in the book a thought, usually only a few, forlorn sentences and lots of fussy harmlessness remain in the film.

Admittedly, at each Literaturverfilmung has made a selection and tightens the template, are sometimes pointed. But with a substance whose themes are perseverance, deceleration and contemplation, such a fast run is just an unfortunate affair. There remains, to continue the metaphor, too much on the line.

One of the most original pictures of the book is Kerkelings analogy between religion and theater, appropriately enough they made it on the canvas. “God is the film, and the church is the cinema, where the film is running,” it says. Who say, a movie is bad, according Kerkeling complained often the poor quality of the demonstration. “Unfortunately, the canvas hangs crooked, has wrinkled, yellowed, and has holes. The crackling speakers, sometimes they fall out completely.”

It’s about criticism of the official church, the institutionalized use of the faith.

This movie is not God, no matter what movie you see him in the video: According to you’d have more than “I’m off” say. The trailer for “I’m off “
