Obituary: On the death of Pierre Brice – THE WORLD

He was the hero of our children. The swarm our girlhood. The less he spoke, the better. In principle he had anyway little text. Actually, he said only, “My brother!” and threw Old Shatterhand while this fantastic intense glances from his bright green eyes. Ten years later, one would have thought the guys for gay, but these were still the innocent sixties. When he died in 1965 in “Winnetou 3″, we sat in the cinema and howled uncontrollably.

At first must Pierre Brice, who actually Baron Pierre Louis Le Bris was called and came from the finest French relations, the Germans considered crazy. He had already turned a dozen films, when he in 1962 with the Spanish competition entry “Los Atracadores” Berlinale came and Horst Wendlandt met who gave him one of the two main roles in the planned Karl May films offered.

Karl who? Brice had no idea. Said he could not ride. And anyway, in the Indian cinema, which is but experience has shown that a ethnologisch lousy thing. Since the agent intervened. A Yugoslavian, which one quasi was on set.

The economic miracle had Winnetou years

“The Treasure of Silver Lake “marked the beginning of a sensational career, and – what was not without well – he promoted the Franco-German friendship. Anyway, east of the Rhine. (Whether the French have ever seen the Karl May movies? No idea.) Twenty years after the war, the Germans verknallten in the man from Brest. And as inviolable was this affection that could be seen from the fact that Brice was asked decades later to guest appearances on television series such as “The Love Boat”, “The Happy Family”, “Klinik unter Palmen” or “Red Roses”.

Unlike Lex Barker, who played the sober Old Shatterhand and in which the Germans are naturally identified itself, was Pierre Brice is the embodiment of romance. These hairs! These gentle eyes! This supple, almost dance-like (not to say feminine) moves! Of course, let him resurrect Wendlandt. For “The Oil Prince”, “Old Surehand”, “Winnetou and the Half-Breed” for “Winnetou and his friend Old Fire Hand”. “Bravo” dedicated to him three sections Star, which was record, the twelve Otto and five Bambis there were. The plates with the easy-listening soundtrack of Martin Böttcher ran on all parties. The economic miracle had Winnetou years.

In Germany Pierre Brice felt loved rightly

Then broke a another reality in. In Berlin Benno Ohnesorg was shot, promptly blew in German cinema a new wind. Compared to the crazy characters that the heads of cooper & amp; Co. sprang, Barker and Brice seemed anachronistic overnight. Harmless. Stuffy. Almost reactionary. Nearly a decade – from 1962 to 1968 – they had dominated German cinema, then they were gone. Signed out. Therefore, the surprise was great when Pierre Brice – Barker was in 1973 died – at the Karl May Festival took back as Winnetou in Elspe. And in 1991 in Bad Segeberg. And 1998 for ZDF the two-parter “Winnetou return” made.

He has just seen as part of his life. In Germany, he felt loved and rightly so. His audience, he used to say again, be faithful “and still there”. That he RTL – which soon will turn three new Winnetou films – offered to play Winnetou’s father, he felt rightly regarded as impudence. But I said only discreetly, he was of this idea “not thrilled”. And in this regard, noted that he had the integrity Winnetou used in recent decades to help people in need.

His autobiography he called “Winnetou I”

In fact, Pierre Brice, who has never made his conservative beliefs a secret, UNICEF ambassador. He brought relief supplies to Bosnia and fought for the animal and species protection in Romania. The French have appointed him for his services to the German-French friendship a Knight of the Legion of Honour, the Germans have honored him with the Order of Merit 1st class. Germany was Pierre Brice not only close, because he – in contrast to his native France -. A movie star was, but also because he had married a German

Pierre Brice wrote his autobiography a decade ago. Her name was – of course – “Winnetou I”. Since 2014 he has lived with his wife Hella in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. He died at the age of 86 years. The hero of our children. The swarm our girlhood. The gentle man with bright green eyes.

Only a dead Indian is a good Indian? The end of Pierre Brice, this crude statement of Major General Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888) from his head to his feet: The best beloved of all Indians is dead He had a long and beautiful life.. Our sorrow does not diminish.
