James Salter: The great writer dies nonagenarian – THE WORLD

Just had all even congratulated him on his 90th birthday. Now he has died, just weeks later, during a physical therapy session in Sag Harbor in the Hamptons. James Salter was born in 1925 in Passaic, New Jersey, as James Horowitz, but he soon changed so as not to arouse the association “Jewish New Yorker writer” – of the sort there was his opinion too many

.

Beginning he had anyway. as a fighter pilot, after training at the Military Academy West Point In the Korean War he flew over 100 missions. Even during the fighting in 1956 he wrote his first book, “The Hunters”, which was released a year later. He retired from flying and the military, to hone the next half century to his prose. Wrote between screenplays for Hollywood, “Downhill Racer” was filmed with Robert Redford. In the adaptation of Salter debut Robert Mitchum played the lead role. Nevertheless Salter long could not emancipate the status of “Writers ‘Writer’, a writer who know the colleagues and especially appreciate. His most successful and also in his opinion the best books were “A Sport and a Pastime” (1967) and “Light Years” (1975) – as the majority of his works are available in German, the Berlin publishing

He lived in the Hudson Valley and worked in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, later it moved the eternal nature enthusiasts to Aspen, Colorado, and in the Hamptons, where he is now dead. His novels, story collections and Memoirs – an autobiography of his letter he had recently agreed with its publisher button, it will probably not appear – are characterized by a flawless language, psychological chased, accurately observed, often bordering on the Mannerism ‘. / p>

In his last novel “Everything is” 2013, the history of World War II veterans Philip Bowman, who by was the Pacific War as a Lieutenant of the Navy in his early twenties, states: “The battles were endless, pitiless, in the tropical jungle, in sweltering heat Then you looked close to shore, the bare palm as piles into the sky, every leaf was blown off, the opponents were cruel fighters, with strange, pagoda-shaped.. constructions on their warships. They did not surrender. They fought to the death. They executed prisoners with razor sharp blades, two-handed swords, raised high above his head, and they were merciless in victory, akimbo weapons in mass triumph in the air. ”

It is a language training to Hemingway, with a similar fascination with the themes of masculinity, violence, love, sexuality. He once gave the wisdom to take along an interviewer, the goal of someone who writes realistic novels, do not be, “to amuse us or appeal to our emotions, but coercing us, the darker and deeper meaning of events remember and understand “.

On Friday, June 19, is James Salter died at the age of 90 years.
