New Job: Simon Rattle changes from Berlin to London – THE WORLD

On-site and with the halo of a music Savior: Simon Rattle, from autumn 2017, the new head of the London Symphony Orchestra, ugly in its homeland, the Barbican Centre Photo: Getty Images

This is a great fall from music Olympus might think, for what could after the Berlin top jobs follow ? A London Orchestra actually not. They will earn less, has much less freedoms and opportunities in the programming, because the budgets are much lower; but above all to rehearse – for financial reasons – less. And that is why none of the London orchestras, although certainly the best collection of musicians at all is there, really top class. And (hello, Munich!) A knotless sounding De-luxe concert hall has this world metropolis not.

But Sir (!) Simon, although now in Berlin unusually well naturalized (also thanks to his new family with third wife and three small children to two adult sons), of course, but mainly British. What lies not only in its still rather rudimentary German. And he can on the Thames bring something meaningful.

Just as he once in his era in Birmingham at the local symphony orchestra not only the industrial city on the musical world map anchored, but also a superb new hall left, it is now of him as still famous figurehead Classic England expects that he does much more: It is hoped that this “descent” an ascent. Rattle is to provide thanks to his authority as attraction that the notoriously damp orchestra are better equipped. It should also allow more (paid) samples, thus the quality increases. And at the end of his ministry is to perhaps finally, although here the most expensive land prices are to be paid at all, a new, great hall stand. From then everyone benefits.

The like sharp-tongued British press Rattle in joyful, PR technically well prepared anticipation of all that in his last guest performances with and without Berlin loud praise red carpets designed. But she has also formulated their expectations of this job very much. “It feels like coming home,” though now says the touted his new commitment. However, he also has to do a lot.

And the aura of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is now less mythical clouded. Because it can therefore carrying conductors working life after them.
