US soul singer Percy Sledge died – STAR

D he US soul singer Percy Sledge is dead. The singer died at the age of 74 at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a cancer, like his longtime manager Steve Green announced. With the included 1966 ballad “When a Man Loves a Woman” Sledge had scored a worldwide hit.

Sledge had “fought against liver cancer for more than a year,” Green said. He was “such a nice person in a bad business” was.

The ballad “Happy Together” is ranked 53 on the list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, music magazine “Rolling Stone”. Sledge was inspired to write the song about a woman who left him for another. He had years earlier buzzed at work in the cotton fields, the melody, said the African American Sledge, who grew up in the embossed particularly from the segregation south of the United States.
