Bryan Ferry is 70: Roxy Music and the King of Cool – STERN

He is the elder statesman of British pop: always cool, always elegantly dressed, and still not tired. Bryan Ferry, lead singer of the group Roxy Music and solo artists will spend his 70th birthday on 26 September in Berlin, on a European tour with his 15th solo album. Big celebration is the occasion not. “One should not think so much about the age, it leads to nothing,” Ferry told the “Welt am Sonntag” laconically

Exuberant Rockstar gestures Ferry has always other left. He can be called a music legend, without exaggeration. Ferry’s career began in the 70s with Roxy Music. The art-rock band played their music with clichés and references, Ferry sang often Dadaist texts staccato-like and always with a bit of ironic distance. In Glitzerjacketts and leopard print Roxy Music were an inspiration for many New Wave bands of the late 70s and early 80s. In 1983, the band broke up in 2001, there was a reunion.

Ferry even the sequined jackets and high heels put aside soon. He is an icon of casual yet elegant style, and is rarely seen without a bespoke suit. “Cool” is the adjective that is most commonly used in connection with Ferry, also because the singer applies talking as reserved. He himself stressed in interviews always to be shy and be able to address women badly.

However, this has not prevented him to perform a series of relationships with models like Amanda Lear and Jerry Hall in the 70s, Before 1982 he married Lucy Helmore. The couple has four sons had shared, divorced of 2003. 2012 Ferry married the more than 30 years younger Amanda Sheppard, but could be back soon divorced. But even with 70 years, women are still a big issue for the musician: “Because women are inscrutable, the world turns more and more,” Ferry told the “Berliner Morgenpost”
