German Book Prize: madness and the presence – ZEIT ONLINE

Taking the reflections of the media seriously, is Ulrich Peltzer Roman Elles the most important book of the year. There was at least one on which rested the greatest expectation. If a book is discussed large in the national feuilletons right at his official show day, that’s a clear statement – and if the relevant magazines like The Mirror or Frankfurter Sonntagszeitung , rush ahead and discuss the title a few days earlier to the front as possible to be tuned even more. As beautiful as in this case, one can rarely observe the journalistic mechanisms; such a book automatically provides for the reviewers to yes to show off the tools and draw attention to the meaning of its own. In fact, immediately put a wow factor a, as the newly installed “We are Pope” critic at levels took the floor: it was obvious he did not care to be the book fair and somehow differentiated to respond to this, but “power” to demonstrate: the whole direction does not fit him.

It appeared later but then still very good meetings, at eye level, the absence of accurate on the literary method Peltzer. It is a novel of the immediate present, the three persons acting in shows with sophisticated storytelling techniques in their professional and private lives. Peltzer does not describe his characters from the outside, but lets his narrator’s voice literally crawl into their heads. It is an evolution of “narrated monologue”, sometimes it is closer to the interior of the figure, a little bit more distant. The perspective can change in mid-sentence, and the various layers of time can subtly merge. Nothing here is as it seems at first, perceived security withering away – a terrific time Roman.

Peltzer refers unmistakably to realizations of modernism. It could prove to what an ingenious way, this author William Faulkner is maintaining or, especially in the captivating dialogues, William Gaddis – is interesting to note that this reference to modernity and late modernity seem again to act provocatively today. After the pop-cultural change, which turned good reasons against encrusted notions of “high culture”, the Modern falls many places secretly under the proscribed high culture. Many contemporary novel pretends there had never been an irritation of popular storytelling, an uncertainty of consciousness and perception. Often one is aware of the complexity of contemporary society does not even and makes them with traditional means of psychodrama, the widescreen movie with comedy or Selfie video. Peltzer novel would offer at for leading an exciting, controversial aesthetic debate about what constitutes literary writing as literature as an art, and not only as a side effect of journalism, might look like today. If the jury would bring themselves to actually give Peltzer novel the German Book Prize, one could only salute in front of her.

counter-proposals to Peltzer are the novels by renowned authors such as Jenny Erpenbeck, Ilija Trojanow or Feridun Zaimoglu: they put less to literary agents than to the occupation of suggestive themes. On the shortlist, it has interestingly only managed Jenny Erpenbeck: many will say, because she is a woman, many also because her book appears in awarding the midst of the current refugee problem, a novel of the hour, so to speak – although the author the current dimensions of the discussion at the Writing could not yet imagine. That a decision would be too bold for Erpenbeck, it could be fatal.

In general, the ratio in accordance counted three women: Inger-Maria Mahlke covers with its Shakespearean title Paraphrase How will you rather sent the need for historical novels from and larded their emancipation and time coloring book with a loud presence covers – which is quite a small showpiece, do not want more than it can, and is probably more successful than Monique Schwitters coquettish Men Apostles Impromptu One in the Other . One should the dynamics in such a jury session but not be underestimated: The German Book Prize is indeed a hybrid of literary-critical considerations and bookselling expertise – which book might lay his aunt on more safely under the Christmas tree? This problem is balanced every year, with each jury on New. As Monique Schwitter could with “amusement”, but possibly also with “draft” points, Inger-Maria Mahlke with the lustful self-submergence into other worlds that are much closer than it seems – the largest Christmas tree hazard but could Rolf Lappert out. About the Winter has been created as a homely family saga, with thoughtfulness and concern, but maybe he’s really a bit too lengthy.

Ever are the jury cause for hope. For that it has 1969 set ie invention of the Red Army Faction by a manic-depressive teenager in the summer on the shortlist Frank Witzel insane Roman D, is a great statement. In this pop-politics-generation novel all consciousness fibers 1970s are put under the microscope, disassembled and reassembled. Long this generation seemed fixated on the apotheosis of the moment, the Rainald Goetz perfected first. Witzel but has now through the entire alternative and underground Postille world of his early period (“Night Café” No. 7, July 1976:. “Before your lips crust”) through work and some writing and Musikwuseligkeiten and is now actually arrived at a great sorcery. Of course, this novel can not get the German Book Prize, he is too crazy and too disparate, aesthetically also probably not at the same level as Ulrich Peltzer. But he has always earned a glamorous silver medal.
