World-music star Papa Wemba is dead – SPIEGEL ONLINE

The Congolese singer Papa Wemba, one of the most popular musicians in Africa, is dead. He died early Sunday morning in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), reported local media. Radio France International reported the death also citing his manager. Papa Wemba suddenly collapsed during a performance at the “FEMUA 2016″ music festival. Videos of the concert show how he is on the stage floor, while the dancers initially go before him with the show. The cause of death is unknown

Born in 1949, Singer, with original name Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba, was considered a king of Congolese rumba. And their “Soukous” mentioned more modern form that enjoyed great success on the African continent. His career spans nearly five decades.

His hits included “Maria Valencia” or “Yolele” successes he celebrated among other things with the band Zaiko Langa Langa, Isifi and Viva La Musica. known to a worldwide audience, he was by a collaboration with the singer Peter Gabriel

In addition, Papa Wemba was considered fashionable model. He inspired young people in Congo, the “La Sape” join movement, whose members great value put on their appearance and spending lots of money on designer clothes.

In 2004, Papa Wemba spent three months in a French prison, because he had illegally helped people to escape from the Congo, calling them spent as members of his band. He later reported to have had a spiritual experience during the prison stay, in which God appeared to him.
