On the death of Zaha Hadid: architect Zaha Hadid dies at age 65 – Tagesspiegel

She was one of the most important Baukünstlerinnen the present: The British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid has died suddenly of a heart attack in Miami, she had resided there precisely because of bronchitis in hospital. Born in Baghdad in 1950, Hadid Iraq had to leave as a teenager because her father the democratic opposition belonged. She went to London, where she studied at the Architectural Association and 1979 an office was opened. For the first time it makes 1982 its award-winning design for the skyscraper project “The Peak” in Hong Kong for attention. It became the pioneer of the movement “Deconstrucitivist Architecture”, which was recognized in 1988 in an exhibition at the New York Museum of Modern Art. For a long time she made primarily as a theorist talked about, was considered a master builder almost without buildings, because their bold plans were considered unfeasible.

But then she made a talking point with spectacular buildings. Her most famous works include the interactive Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg, the Olympic Swimming Stadium in London, the National Museum of Modern Art Maxxi in Rome and the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati (USA). They also planned the Center for Performing Arts in Abu Dhabi, an opera house in Guangzhou, the Innovation Tower in Hong Kong, and mountain resorts and a ski jump in Innsbruck. In Germany, they realized the Vitra in Weil am Rhein and early an IBA apartment block in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

“99 percent of the architecture in the world is determined not by architects but by builders,” Hadid said already in 2000. Most was conventional and obey commercial considerations, this smother the architecture. Her concern, “possible much of what is considered as a theoretical concept, to convert them into the architectural mainstream. So not so much about their own style, but to the common good.” Tst
