A book can give comfort, give hope or become a symbol. So it was in France after the attacks on the satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” in January this year. Back then it was “Le Traité sur la tolerance” of Voltaire, a call for tolerance between religions, which became a bestseller. Now many Frenchmen process terror again literarily, with “Paris – A Moveable Feast” by Ernest Hemingway.
The classic of the US writer last week has sold thousands of times in France. Every day there will be up to 500 editions, which go over the counter – previously there were loud “Le Figaro” ten a day. The Nobel portrays in his work from the sixties autobiographical scenes and memories of his life in Paris between 1921 and 1926.
the triggers for the Hemingway boom was a TV report on French TV channel BFMTV in which a woman’s position in Paris reflected thereby mentioned the book. “It’s very important, ‘Paris – A Moveable Feast’ reading of Hemingway repeatedly, because we are a very ancient civilization and we carry our values very proud,” the 77-year-old said shortly after the attacks.
With regard to France, she said: “We are fraternizing with the five million Muslims who practice their religion freely and peacefully, and we will fight against the 10,000 barbarians who allegedly kill in the name of Allah..”
With Amazon in France was Hemingway classics on Friday, the best-selling book. The under the English title “A Moveable Feast” posthumous masterpiece had many places to be reordered.
