As at noon today by 13 clock, the Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy French writer Patrick Modiano as Nobel this year exclaimed, he concealed once that Modiano still knew nothing about it, because it has previously not reached him. Given the history of French Literature, who reject this award even before (Jean-Paul Sartre in 1964), the Academy has not spared a certain risk, but at the Modiano is not to be feared.
He was born on June 30, 1945, shortly after the war, and his mother was one of those Belgians who had fled to the occupation of their country by the Wehrmacht to Paris that was even occupied German, but promised by the size of the city better living conditions. This family history founded Modianos interest for the period of occupation which should be the main theme of his work and has now been explicitly mentioned as a central reason for the award of the Nobel Prize: Modiano have debunked his “Memorial Art” those years
.
He is in France to the part of intellectuals who protested with their books tirelessly against the trivialization of the Vichy regime. It is, as he himself once said, the “duty of memory” that drives him. His debut novel, “La Place de l’Étoile”, was dedicated to the life of Raphael Schlemilowitschs, one immediately after the war born Jew who hallucinates about his life and thereby also the years before mixed fantastically with your own destiny.
Funky conventional
Released in 1968, the book hit the nerve of these politically turbulent times and has won several literary awards. In German it was not published until 2010, after a revised version by the author from the year 2004 nobody had noticed at shows that this novel the same title was like a book of Robert Desnos, a war deported to Buchenwald French Jewish poet, even after the liberation of the concentration camp Theresienstadt to Typhius died just days before Modianos birth.
Such subterranean details are typical of Modianos telling. As an internal entanglement of his novel substances. So he revealed the secret of the title inspiration for “La Place de l’Étoile” In 1997, in another novel, “Dora Bruder”, told as equivalent to the debut of the story of a young Jewish woman during the Nazi occupation in France.
In contrast, the style is the more conventional in his debut only twenty-two year old, sometimes applying French standards. Of course, Modiano has not escaped as a teenager the influence of the Nouveau Roman, but at the same time he did not have to beat in the aesthetic band this time the dominant literature. Modiano reads fluently, and therefore he caused a sensation. The summit in France, he reached in 1978, when he for “Rue de boutiques obscures” (in German “The alley of dark stores”) won the Prix Goncourt. It should take thirty-six years until this triumph has now been surpassed.
From the autobiography of Crime
Just a week ago Modiano has published his new novel in France: “Pour que tu ne te perdes pas dans le quartier” (So you do not verläufst you in the quarter). This book is again primed autobiographical in good part. But the writers like to change the forms: “L’Herbe of nuits” of 2012, for example, tells a detective story that evokes the Paris of the sixties, the time when Modiano studied at the Sorbonne
.
More are on the topic
Modianos books in this country last all published by Hanser, before he was transferred among others, Ullstein and Suhrkamp ; for the latter house has Peter Handke translated the book “Une Jeunesse Gallimard” of 1981 (“A Youth”). Last of all came in 2013 “The Horizon”, three years after the original French. In the new novel, the publisher will make less time. “Grasses of the Night”, published in France in 2012, is already preferred by Hanser Verlag in this fall, although it was originally to be published until the spring.
