“Star Trek” is 50: With warp drive through TV history – Huffington Post Germany

It is the year 1966. In Germany, Kurt Kiesinger supersedes Chancellor’s successor Ludwig Erhard. In China, the Cultural Revolution began. thanks to the infamous Wembley gate England is world champion. And in the US, a gang of unknown actor visits in “Star Trek” on a journey through the galaxy. So really wants to start but no enthusiasm for the adventures of Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Co.. It quickly becomes clear, such sci-fi entertainment has no future in television. Today, exactly 50 years, a total of 725 series episodes and 13 films later, we can not agree with this thesis.

The beginning of Star Travel

Which Stars next movie part of “Star Trek will be “here, learn Clipfish
screenwriter, television producer and series creator Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991) was ahead of his time, so much can be said in retrospect. Maybe not the nearly 300 years that played its series “Star Trek” for those days in the future. but definitely the three years it took before Neil Armstrong on July 21, 1969 walk on the moon and with his “big leap for mankind” on earth a veritable storm of enthusiasm for all triggered that had to do with the space – so having found for “Star Trek”.

for indeed seemed the adventures of William “Bill” Shatner as a fearless spaceship captain after only two and a half years to an abrupt end. While the crew of the Enterprise gathered a loyal but very small fanbase around and was canceled after only three seasons. Only a few years after Armstrong’s moon trip, the early 70s, there was the great renaissance of the original “Star Trek” episodes on TV, what should the show gain its current cult status.

Picard held Kirk

except for an entertaining animation series called “the Enterprise” it took yet more than 20 years before a new Enterprise in the TV penetrated again in galaxies that no one has seen before. From 1987 to 1994 the famous theater actor Patrick Stewart took over the space captain office in “The Next Generation”. Thanks to significantly higher production budget, the second “Star Trek” series blossomed into a fixture in the international television, 178 episodes allowed the crew to fly to explore through space
But Captain Kirk had not been used in this period -. 1979 in “Star Trek: the Motion Picture” to 1991 in “Star Trek VI: the undiscovered country” he had cinema audiences under control. Only in 1994, with “Generations,” changing of the guard also took place here, where Kirk was donated a special farewell in the seventh part of the film series.

Star Trek had ups and downs

Nothing seemed to double triumph on television and being able to stop in the cinema. The next series “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” made it approximately seven seasons and a loyal fan base today. The first fully own film of the new Enterprise crew, “First Contact”, considered by many followers – next to “The Wrath of Khan” – even as the best strip of the series

But then they were visible. first cracks in so stable foundation believed the Sci-Fi instance. The series “Voyager” was among fans as well as their successors, “Star Trek: Enterprise” rapidly than disappointment, worse hit it in the movie sequels “Insurrection” and “Nemesis” to. The brand “Star Trek” now seemed yet peaked and the boundaries of film and television universe to have reached. But wait: What about alternative universes

The new start

Ironically J.J.? Abrams, who has a little relieved with his ambitious series “Lost”, was hired as a savior – and he should succeed! For a reprint of the original characters Kirk, Spock and company he was unceremoniously come up with an alternate timeline and was able to send the known stretching so to unknown adventures. The audiences found this idea great and flowed 2009 masse into theaters to see “Star Trek”.

Just two sequels has now pulled this reboot by itself, “Star Trek Into Darkness” and very fresh ” Star Trek Beyond “. The latter, directed by Justin Lin action expert. Above all, the new cast to Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana seems to convince the audience. A fourth part will come. But then a crew member of the Enterprise is missing: Anton Yelchin aka Ensign Pavel Chekov. He died as a complete surprise 19 June 2016 a tragic accident on his property. Producer JJ Abrams has stated that Yelchins role will not be filled.

The Future

One end of the popular sci-fi series is so even after 50 years is anything but in view , In addition to feature films is namely the first time since “Star Trek: Enterprise” from 2001 again a new series in the pipeline. This time, even the streaming service Netflix finger in the pie. And the focus is to be on a female Lieutenant Commander. With “Star Trek: Discovery” will be from January 2017 so again on the small screen, the limits of the universe explored – maybe then yes again with more positive feedback from the fans
