New Zealand: Rescued tourist talking about horrible time – SPIEGEL ONLINE

In tears has a tourist from the Czech Republic reported how her partner died while hiking in New Zealand – and as rescuers found it a month later in a cabin. The time was horrible, Pavlina P. told a news conference.

The woman and her partner Ondrej P. had started on 26 July for a hike on the Routeburn Track. The 32-kilometer route is typically not a big challenge, but in the winter from June to August, they can be dangerous.

The couple said, according to the woman anyone about the migration decision, took no tracking device with and underestimated the weather conditions. “All these aspects have contributed to our tragedy,” she said. The man’s body was recovered by now.

The couple had about half of the walking route managed when it got lost, because the landmarks were obscured by snow. It was snowing heavily and was foggy. Tourists’re looking for in a cabin protection. “In our attempts to reach the hut, has the tragic accident occurred,” said Pavlina P.

The man slipped on an embankment and was wedged between branches and stones. He died there. His girlfriend stayed the night with him. The woman had tried in vain to help him, said the Czech Consul Vladka Kennett. “She stayed in the first night with him because she wanted to be with him, and they came because of the weather conditions in any case no further.”

the following night spent Pavlina P. outdoors. She tried to get the blood circulation in her feet upright and put on all the clothes and blankets that were with her.

Eventually, they found the hut, said the tourist. Through a window they had entered the quarters of gamekeepers, who do not live there in winter. The woman lived on inventories of gamekeepers.

Several times she tried to move on. But her aching feet and avalanches they deterred. At the latest after a few hundred meters with self-made snowshoes and crampons it is vice versa.

Overall, the women spent nearly a month at the lodge. With ashes she wrote a big “H” as a call for help in the snow. But no one came: Other hikers avoided the route because of the weather, helicopter crews overlooked the woman

According to police, it took weeks before friends and family in the Czech Republic realized that the couple something had to have happened.. The Czech Consulate had informed the investigators until Wednesday, then you have immediately initiated the search. The woman was very relieved when they saw their rescuers. According to police, she was hypothermic, had frostbite and minor injuries.
