Xavier Naidoo for ESC-rejection: “Decision is ok for me” – t-online.de

Xavier Naidoo now not fits in the decision of the NDR, but for him to Germany Euro Vision Song Contest to send to Stockholm. “When shortly after our contractual agreement with the NDR and the completion of all preparations have changed by unilateral decision now planning the ARD, then that’s ok for me,” he said on his Facebook page.

The ARD was approached a few months ago to him and asked him to compete for Germany at the ESC, said the 44-year-old. “That was the sole proposed by the ARD,” he added. “I finally agreed after careful consideration, because this competition would have been a very special event for me.”

“We have misjudged”

The NDR had recently announced that Naidoo will not go now for Germany to Stockholm. ARD entertainment coordinator Thomas Schreiber basing its decision on the fierce criticism of the person of the singer. “It was clear that he polarized, but the brunt of the reactions surprised us. We have misjudged,” explained Schreiber. The ongoing discussions could seriously harm the ESC. “For this reason, Xavier Naidoo will not start for Germany.”

Critics accuse the singer close to conspiracy theorists as the right-wing populist Reich citizens, and racism and homophobia before. Schreiber defended Naidoo against these allegations: “Xavier Naidoo is an outstanding singer who is homophobic yet I am convinced that neither racist.”

As soon as possible should now be decided how the German contribution for the ESC in Stockholm is found. The NDR has within the ARD the auspices of the ESC.

criticism and resistance

Against the Grand Prix participation of the controversial singer fierce resistance had moved. On the Internet several petitions were running against the ARD plans to let the musicians compete for the ESC unrivaled. Multiple Naidoo has in recent years discussions triggered – for example, when he spoke on the Day of German Unity 2014 the right-wing populist Reich citizens, do not recognize Germany as a sovereign state

However, Naidoo also received backing. Yet on Saturday the concert promoter Marek Lieberberg had put in plain words behind him (“Rock am Ring”). Overlooking the allegations against the Mannheimer Lieberberg said: “I am deeply shocked by the incredible agitation, the sickening hypocrisy and blind hatred, for which there is no justification!” He had never had in over 20 years feel that at Naidoo “even the hint of an anti-Semitic, racist, xenophobic or nationalist sentiment exists”.

Naidoo pointed criticism back

Also Naidoo had previously based on the allegations and position can be explained in a press release of the NDR: “With all my being I stand for a cosmopolitan and hospitable Germany and a respectful and peaceful interaction with each other.” He was glad to live in a “colorful” Germany, with a variety of lifestyles and religions. “I have always stressed that I do not agree with the so-called Reich citizens, of which I have also clearly distanced me publicly.”
