“The Hunger Games 4 – Mockingjay Part 2″: film criticism – SPIEGEL ONLINE

You only wanted to save her sister. But like millions of readers and moviegoers know Katniss Everdeen comes in the “Hunger Games”-narrative a different role to: Your struggle for survival in perfidious circus games has made the “Girl on Fire” for doubting figurehead of a rebellion against the totalitarian regime in the post-apocalyptic country of Panem .

“Mockingjay Part 2″ now closes the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian novel series, and thus to say farewell: From a blockbuster phenomenon that a crucial bit cryptic, sincere and was simply likeable than for the commercial success should have been. And from a heroine – vividly portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence – whose resist perpetual becoming inflamed not only the hearts of the young target audience.

Before that is the last stage of a campaign in which cameras are as important as guns, if not more important. Under the leadership of Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) moves the recruited from the districts of the country rebel army of the Capitol before, the power center Panems and headquarters of the hated President Snow (Donald Sutherland).

In Coins strategy to Katniss as telegenic face the revolution with video messages win over the masses. For shooting a barrage is made to the next Katniss’ childhood friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) heard after her torture and indoctrination by the opposite side of returned traumatized partners from the Hunger Games. Alone, the star of the propaganda project has other plans: Katniss does not want off the front posing in smoldering ruins, but quit Snows hand rule.

Between TV campaign and tyrannicide

The deadly productions of “Hunger Games” from the previous films have blown now the abgezirkelten arenas of the regime and are in the final anywhere in the gray aggregate concrete world Panems arrived. In “Mockingjay” blur the boundaries between manipulative media battle and bloody civil war, between the TV campaign and tyrannicide, which is why the figures need to ask constantly what is “real” or “not real” in this bitter conflict and their own perception.

So was Katniss’ rebellion, under the direction of Francis Lawrence unfussy its climax and end approaches, always an aesthetic rebellion: a struggle for sovereignty of interpretation in the war of signs and images. From as resourceful as compassionate Survival specialist with bow and arrow so arose initially a folk heroine who reminded intuitive to forgotten forms of resistance, and finally an excessive shining light of the lumpenproletariat.

infer vital questions for Katniss as for the whole of Panem, the “Mockingjay” discussed with impressive consistency. Because can from the larger than life myth to be an independently acting subject ever again? And lets symbolic politics real change to, or are they old, authoritarian structures merely a new coat of varnish?

bombs do not provide the answers, and they are not even that will decide this war. Another reason why the action scenes have no cathartic moment in “Mockingjay”. The martial violence eruption in the Capitol – a rugged, futuristic crossover between Pyongyang and Metropolis, in which not a few of the Berlin locations to discover – is raw, painful and bar a triumphal feeling. In the brittle narrative of fighting and many dying on the other hand once again shines a superb cast that from the first movie raised the “Hunger Games” franchise on the genre average.

A history against the impotence

In addition to the ubiquitous Lawrence return illustrious performers such as Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Jena Malone, Jeffrey Wright, Julianne Moore and Donald Sutherland with great seriousness returned to their figures. Similarly, there is a posthumous reunion with the sorely missed Philip Seymour Hoffman, and while Liam Hemsworth its often thankless role fills credible, it’s Josh Hutcherson, in the last part to show a special performance: Its Peeta Mellark is an oppressed soul in the shade, because where the flaming rhetoric of rebellion can heat anything. Make this drawn and war-weary baker’s son take the moral center gently turn is another quality of this elegiac statements.

The glorious knows no winners, only survivors, invalids and victims. You dedicated the film far more attention, passion and affection as his functional spectacle. It is the strength of the “Hunger Games” series and is the enduring legacy of Katniss Everdeen remain: to use no fantasies of omnipotence, but to tell a story to the powerlessness and the nightmares.

That is, in the best sense, Hollywood, is fiction, is not real . But real.
