The Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami’s dead. He died at the age of 76 years in France, as the Iranian news agency ISNA reported on Monday. Accordingly Kiarostami had traveled last week from Tehran to France to receive treatment there for cancer. Now he had lost the fight against cancer, Isna reported.
Kiarostami had already undergone a series of operations in Iran earlier this year, ISNA reported. For the funeral he was being brought back to Iran.
The highly respected in Iran and abroad filmmaker comes from Tehran and counted in the 60 years the so-called New Wave in Iranian cinema. After the Islamic revolution in 1979, he remained in the country but later worked again abroad. In 1997 his film “Taste of Cherry” at the Cannes Film Festival was awarded the Palme d’Or.
A few days ago Kiarostami had been invited together with hundreds of other filmmakers as new member in the Oscar Academy. With the selection of its new members, the organization responded in Hollywood on criticism of the lack of diversity in their ranks. Members of the Oscar Academy decide each year, who will be honored with the world’s most coveted film awards. ( AFP )
