If two masters of storytelling come together, not much can go wrong
Steven Spielberg, who with “ET 1982 -. The aliens “one of the most successful science fiction tales brought to the canvas, and the legendary British children’s author Roald Dahl kidnap common in the world of giants, from the perspective of a little girl. In “BFG – Big Friendly Giant” mix Dahls bizarre and macabre humor with Spielberg touching handwriting and technical perfection.
1982 wrote Dahl (1916 – 1990) the children’s book bestseller “The BFG” (original title: “The BFG”) about the unusual friendship between a lonely and fearless orphan girl in London, of a good-natured giant in the remote land of giants is taken. That same year, Spielberg was “E.T.” for big blockbuster. This was about the close friendship of extraterrestrials with children, protect the strange and shy Alien.
“E. T.” was the then seven-year Drew Barrymore to great child star. “BFG” could now be a springboard for the eleven-year-old Ruby Barnhill. Her first feature film role copes Briton in stylish self-confidence, the perfect choice for the curious and fearless heroine Sophie.
outdone is Barnhill – in size and theatrical brilliance – only by her compatriot Mark Rylance. The Briton, who as taciturn Russian spy in Spielberg – the Oscar took “Bridge of Spies The Negotiator” this year for Best Supporting Actor, gaining as a lovable, but also sad and lonely giant fast the heart of Sophie – and the audience.
The “Big Friendly Giant” is completely computer animated, but behind the gray stubble, wild mane of hair and the huge ears the sly facial expression of the actor can be seen immediately. With the help of special effects to Rylance turned into a seven-foot giant who is seen in one of his nightly forays into London from the sleepless orphan. Gently yet fearsome attacks a giant hand through the window of the dormitory and grabs the curious girl.
After initial panic Sophie sums quickly confidence. Thus a wondrous and dangerous journey begins in the distant land of giants where BFG is harassed by nine brutish giants with names like Fleshlumpeater and Bonecruncher. The nasty giants can also people smell and Sophie would prefer to eat. Do not worry at BFG, which is vegetarian and feeds on mucous vegetables.
The strange babbling loner finds in Sophie quickly a helper. In a magical dreamland he begins a colorful glowing dreams that are shuffled in preserving jars and then breathed into sleeping people.
In Dahls oblique world, the Queen of England come (Penelope Wilton), their house maid Mary (Rebecca Hall) and a brew before which releases explosive farts. Spielberg is preparing the wild imagination of the British on family friendly. But there remain enough creepy monster scenes and chases left with the nasty giants. But a look into the gentle eyes of the BFG is enough: It’s about a wonderful friendship and the power of a little girl, big problems to solve.
