obituary by Thomas Steinfeld

You’ll not be fooled by the cheery, friendly face that Péter Esterházy loved to wear, of the voltes an irony that even talking every word then palpated, what nonsense is wrest him from the fighting spirit of an appointed soccer player wearing the long shots would have loved if the dribble would not have been so much more entertaining and would have been caught offside nothing so much beauty: Péter Esterházy was one of the few great writers, which still exist in the present, one as Peter Handke, as Colm Tóibín, one who was really devoted to the language, because it is the only medium of communication, a truth is powerful.

Péter Esterházy material history, the history of Europe, Hungary’s history, the history of his own family, a sideline was ( “impoverished”, he explained repeatedly) of the famous family of the Esterházy. These stories was not only the most important and most famous of his books, the novel “Celestial Harmonies” in 2000, but all of his work, from stories in “Fancsiskó and Pinta” (a Hungarian childhood story, the original 1976), to thinks his latest book “the Markus version” (2016), in which he, ill with cancer, not only through its in communist Hungary banished to the province family, but also reflected on God’s Passion, as they handed the Gospel of Mark .

voices of mother, father, a soldier from the 17th century

Never told Esterházy easy, always broke away his stories into a single and cons speeches of voices and views. No, always Esterházy told simply, and most of the voices he amassed (or rather, wanted desperately to have a say), did well: the voice of the father, the mother’s voice, the voice of a soldier from the 17th century, a character from a novel of another writer. Difficult things were the fact that they were all talking, so just how real people dealing with the same claim to truthfulness, with sensitivity, with obstinacy that also – together with the basic unreliability that is such votes as its own (the novel of untrustworthiness is the book in 2013 in German published “Esti”).

Because Péter Esterházy but the most attentive, most sensitive and Educated was all recipients now that could have these stories, has this universal Erzählerei two, if not three Consequences. Their first is loneliness: How does one imagine a people zudringen to all these voices and tried to bring order into it, if not as a whole to be posed, to the deepest depths of his heart skeptical beings? The second consequence is the opposite of the postmodernists that was said Esterházy, because the home and together the motives, plots and characters who appeared in his books, a radical historicism seemed to belong.

Tell, an act the assertiveness

But the opposite is true: Sometimes, no often, like bizarre figures have originated here. But their recipients, the sensitive, attentive listeners and Nachschreiber, was a very serious person, determined to wrest this diversity a reason. That this task was big, considering a consciously experienced communist regime (born 1950 Esterházy was a mathematician and organizer of a public company before 1976 throughout the literature turned to), mindful of a oversized family history, in the face of a father, how late turned out, had worked for the secret service – this overpowering reflected in the books. Literary they won by. But the doubt must have been existentially.

The third episode is an act of self-assertion. Because it was the writer who those voices not only heard, but also arranged. It was his calling, they occur all and make them disappear. And it was his size, to identify them and endure. Péter Esterházy died Thursday at the age of only 66 years. His death is an immense loss
