TIME ONLINE we treat the topic of suicide, since there are indications that certain forms of coverage lead to imitation reactions. Scientists call this phenomenon Werther effect , based on Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther , after its publication, a number of young men committed suicide.
After the German National goalkeeper Robert Enke 2009 ended his life, the number of suicides increased on railway lines in Germany. Report Markus Schäfer and Oliver Quiring of the University of Mainz, that in the first four weeks after Enke death in Germany 133 suicides were more records, as would have been expected according to the official death statistics for this period (Schaefer & amp; Quiring, 2013).
In psychology there are various explanations for the Werther effect. As recognized is especially the theory of model learning of the psychologist Albert Bandura, stating that people learn behaviors that they previously observed with other people – especially if they can identify with the person.
