The psychiatrist Hector breaks out of his well-ordered life and embarks on a journey around the world. He wants to find the recipe for happiness. Comedian Simon Pegg proves in “Hector’s journey” that he also masters the soft tones.
The life of a London psychiatrist Hector runs like clockwork. He and girlfriend Clara (Rosamund Pike) are perfectly attuned to each other, no surprise disrupts the smooth flow of their daily lives. Since Hector demands changes even in his fee and the prices never increased, he has to do well. He seems however to his patients hardly help answer questions preferably with counter-questions. But strangely, the otherwise serene go psychiatrist the trivial problems of patients increasingly on the mind. Hector is suddenly astonished that he himself is not happy. How can he so help his patients?
The Control Freak decides the previously unthinkable. He embarks on a world tour that will bring him an answer on the crucial question: What is happiness and how do you start it up? Equipped with multi-function trousers and reversible floppy hat breaks Hector to his first intermediate target on Shanghai. On the plane he meets the wealthy investment banker Edward (Stellan Skarsgård). The leads him while in the luxurious pleasures of life, and paid him a charming call girl. In the search for the nature of the true happiness of cynical workaholic but can not help.
Undeterred Hector pulls on. He meets an aged monk, a ruthless drug dealer (Jean Reno), a terminally ill woman, a brain scientist (Christopher Plummer) and visits his first love Agnes (Toni Collette). They all give Hector small and big blocks to happiness. However, the crucial piece of the puzzle he must contribute themselves.
Real example
“Hectors journey or the pursuit of happiness” based on the bestseller by François Lelord. The French psychiatrist had as his novel’s protagonist his practice closed to explore the world and go to the fundamental issues of life on the ground. In his travels Lelord seems to have collected all sorts of lessons, because after his debut novel, numerous other adventures of Hector appeared.
So for Simon Pegg there would be enough material to slip back into Hector’s skin. And a reunion would be welcome, because for Pegg is this childlike hero a great role. It shows a wonderfully quiet side of the 44-year-olds beyond “Star Trek” -Action and British humor à la “The World’s End” (incidentally also with Rosamund Pike). It also does not hurt that Pegg much of Hector very revered comic character Tim from “Tintin” is similar.
parallels to Ben Stiller
More about
The story of the boyish, colorless Everyones, the experienced mad on unerring Backpack Mission Adventure, very reminiscent of “The Amazing Life of Walter Mitty” by Ben Stiller. And not only in content – in both films, a full-blooded comedian shows its unfortunately rarely used more serious side. As in Stiller’s film strongly depends also the enjoyment of “Hector’s Journey” on how much one may engage in the naive fairy-tale tone.
At times, the film by director Peter Chelsom is (“Funny Bones “) Although unexpectedly bleak, as Hector gets into South Africa in serious trouble. Otherwise dominate in London, Canada, South Africa and China turned German-Canadian co-production sounds a little. Veronica Ferres has a successful mini appearance as a fortune teller, the hopes of Hector help in restoring their psychic abilities and provides the decisive impetus for his world tour.
