All the major film awards scored: Oscar, Golden Globe, Praemium Imperiale and the Hollywood Award for Lifetime Achievement. Also in Europe, the director was celebrated in Cannes and the Berlinale. Actor Ben Kingsley (“Gandhi”) said on the occasion of his death: “I and millions of others he has touched through his life and work, will miss him deeply.”
