British film legend: “Gandhi” director Richard Attenborough is dead – Daily Mirror

more than six decades dominated Richard Attenborough the world of British film – as an actor and director. On Sunday, he died at the age of 90 years.

The British actor and director Richard Attenborough is dead. Academy Award winner died on Sunday at the age of 90 years, told the BBC his son. Attenborough was more than six decades, one of the most important representatives of the British film, both as an actor and as a director. Prime Minister David Cameron paid tribute to him in the evening as one of the “giants of the film world.”

With his role as Pinky in the film adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel “Brighton Rock” Attenborough in 1947 succeeded the great breakthrough. It followed the war movie “The Great Escape” (1963) and 30 years later, “Jurassic Park”. Attenborough then turned to the director.

His film “Gandhi” won several Oscars, including one for best director Attenborough. His film “Cry Freedom” about the South African freedom fighter Steve Biko also achieved world fame. “To direct, allowed me to do things I could not do as an actor,” Attenborough once said.



Richard Attenborough returned in “Jurassic Park” as an actor back

Attenborough was knighted in 1976 by Queen Elizabeth II.. In 1993 received the title of Lord Attenborough. In the same year he returned with a role in Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” as an actor back.

Attenborough was born on August 29, 1923. His parents were strict followers of the Labour Party, the two Jewish refugees from Germany adopted at the outbreak of the Second World War. Attenborough was married to actress Sheila Sim since 1945. He was last seen alive with her in a nursing home.

The couple had three children, including the theater director Michael Attenborough. Attenborough’s brother is David Attenborough, the famous British TV nature expert. Attenborough’s daughter and his 14 years-old granddaughter died in the Asian tsunami of 2004 (AP)
