Charlie Brown and his friends are back – in the cinema – Hamburger Abendblatt

35 years in the cinema landscape quite a long time. 1980 was the last time to see a movie with the “Peanuts” on the canvas. Now the great little characters celebrate their comeback. There is much to discover in the familiar world of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy and all the others. But of course there is news. The red-haired girl draws in the neighborhood and brings Charlie Brown, who raves about it for a long time, pretty messed up. Snoopy gets a curly companion named Fifi. And all the “Peanuts” cavort in 3D on the big screen.

Steve Martino was proud and worried at the same time. Great was the director of Blue Sky Studios, who already “Ice Age 4″ and “Horton Hears a Who!” staged that Bryan and Craig Schulz, son and grandson of the “Peanuts” -Erfinders Charles M. Schulz, who came to him to ask him to make a movie with the famous cartoon characters. Concern was him that many, which he told of his plan, the conversation with the warning ended: “But not versemmele it”

The “Peanuts” with her wit, her joie de vivre and their thoughtfulness enjoy high approval ratings to date and set new standards in the comic. Since 1950, Charles M. Schulz drew the eternal Unlucky Charlie, who never gives up, and his illustrious friends flock. Your predecessor appeared from 1947 to 1950 under the title “Li’l Folks”. First Snoopy was a normal dog and the other characters less expressive than today.

1999 Schulz announced that he would stop work on the drawing board for health reasons. He had always worked on stock. On Sunday 13 February 2000 published its last Sunday comics. The day before he died at the age of 77 years at his home in Santa Rosa, California. Someone who has done much for the reputation of the Peanuts in Germany, is the Hamburg comic expert Andreas C. Knigge. First, as a lecturer in the Carlsen publishing house, later as an author of Schulz -Biografie “The big Peanuts-book”. He describes this as the comic author as a man who grew up sheltered, reluctantly traveled and was a bit contact shy. “There have been in his life three important people who were named Charles Brown,” he says. In nearly 18,000 books he whose alter ego then immortalized. Knigge, in whose apartment piling up countless comics, full of admiration for the “Peanuts” author. “For me he is the greatest of all.” Bill Clinton sees the apparently similar: “. Charles M. Schulz was an American sanctuary – an artist, a philosopher and a keen observer of human nature”

How to go to such a film adaptation zoom? Martino drew a staff of assistants together. Family Schulz granted them access to the “Peanuts” Museum in Santa Rosa, California, and the archives. “The Jean Schulz’s widow has given us his world. She showed us how to understand Charles Schulz.”

Jean Schulz, who was 17 years younger than her husband, remembers what it was like to have been married to this signatory. “He did it like an office job and was proud that he had enough time to play with his five children. He was almost all the time at home.” In his hometown of one made little fuss about Schulz, unless he met controversial decisions as hockey referee. On the other hand if he owned the stadium was played in. About his work, he did not tell much at home. If the family wanted to make holiday times, he had to preparatory work, the comics published daily. “Once we went to Wimbledon because Billie Jean King had invited us,” said the widow recalls. King in the 70s was a very successful US tennis player. Marcie is modeled after her. Has Jean Schulz spoke with her husband about his German roots? In January 1945, he came as a GI into the land of the ancestors of his father. “His mother’s family was more important Norwegian,” says Schulz. “They were funny and hooligans. If Lucy her brother Linus a down skin, rather this family was the model.”

The film crew had the characters initially minutely and study from as many angles and on Computer design. Martino called it the “Van Pelt University”. Van Pelt is a surname of Lucy, Linus and Rerun, but does not appear in the film. The director drummed the animators a motto: “Find the stroke of the pen!” He did not geometrically perfect characters, but as close as possible to the drawn original, small irregularities included. A thoroughly charming decision.

The film is noticeable in the respect that Martino had before submission. But it is perhaps also because the Schulz-descendants have written the screenplay. Even though this film looks trick technically less innovative, some new ways had to be taken. There were at Blue Sky a division of specialists who only bothered to write software for the clothing of the characters, if the move. The he concluded. “We have rather done by hand.” And 3D? The need Comics actually not, but this technique is currently popular and “state of the art” in the animated film.

The director is now hoping for a young audience as possible. A new generation can now discover the Peanuts. “I very much hope that the kids want to learn more about the characters even more, even if among them probably are hardly what, read the newspaper. Maybe you can somehow make the adventures online,” he says.

At peak times of the comic in 2600 newspapers were printed in 26 countries. In 1969, the characters were so popular that during the Apollo 10 mission, the spacecraft “Charlie Brown” was christened and the Lunar Module “Snoopy”. Linus’ security blanket made it as a “security blanket” even the “Oxford English Dictionary”. Of course these are facts and figures from another era. For 15 years no new books more have appeared since Charles Schulz had allowed himself to assure the right that his comic should be continued by anyone.

For the newspaper comics which is also respected. But there are new books, to which Vicky Scott have the text and Paige Braddock contributed the drawings. After all the merchandising industry is trying to close the gaps in our knowledge of children and already brings in more than a year increases “Peanuts” products on the market. Also in the Mercedes-advertising the comic characters are currently active. But is that enough? The world of subscribed “peanuts” is still relatively complex. Of course, the characters are cute, but some of the books are aimed more on the experience of the adult world.

Charlie Brown is now time not a protagonist with super powers, just as they are in the movies currently in a particular fashion. He is as eternal losers indeed an anti-hero, but a particularly likeable. It’s just not that simple. This was confirmed by director Steve Martino, who has not personalize it messed with the answer to the question about his favorite character in the film: “I would have liked as Linus, he’s such a good friend,” he says. “But I’m afraid we’re all Charlie Brown.”
