Martin Roth is one of the most important German museum directors: Only in July was the London Victoria and Albert Museum – named the Museum of the year – since 2011 under his direction. Now he admits his post. Is also the Proposed referendum on United Kingdom membership of the European Union debt?
Martin Roth’s this summer gone through a rollercoaster of emotions: in July, he was pleased with the award Museum of the year in the UK for its Victoria and Albert Museum. The jury concluded Roth, he had made one of the most popular museums in the country one of the best in the world. But at the same quarreled Roth with the decision of the British to withdraw from the EU. The outcome of the referendum of 23 June he regarded as a personal defeat, shortly before he had opened a new European exhibition at the Victoria and Albert.
His withdrawal from the post of director in London founded Roth over the fact that he again wished more politically active – he found it pathetic that undertake the artistic and cultural world against social threats. Europe now needs more than just good exhibitions.
From Dresden to London
The Schwabe Roth was five years ago from Dresden to London come. Under his leadership, the 160 year old art and design museum has celebrated major successes in Kensington and won a new reputation. 300,000 visitors saw 2013 as the David Bowie exhibition, 500,000, last year’s exhibition of the fashion designer Alexander McQueen. The exhibition on music and rebellion 1966-1970, which starts this week, promises to be another hit.
