Obituary of Alan Rickman: King of Thieves scene – SPIEGEL ONLINE

Alan Rickman was already over 40 years old, when he conquered Hollywood as his movie character Hans Gruber, the skyscraper of the Nakatomi Corporation in “Die Hard” (1988). What a performance!

In one scene Gruber stands with the Japanese Takagi, whose headquarters has just brought a gang Gangster German under his control the terrorist in the elevator. “Nice suit” – “nice suit” – so Gruber starts an attempt to make small talk: Why not stay in a hostage situation Gentleman? (Watch scene here on YouTube)

Takagi stares the gangsters only angry, and what is thereupon looming in his face such a great game of amusement, malice and genuine sense of style that today, almost 30 years later, in numerous outpouring of grief in social media immediately the name of Hans Gruber falls.

Clear, primarily was “Die Hard” Bruce Willis with the blockbuster Star. But Rickman, the Briton, created with his very first Hollywood appearance equal to a villain classic.

become aware were some US producers on Rickman for his role as Vicomte de Valmont in a Broadway production of “Dangerous Liaisons” , Rickman traveled to the West Coast, but was skeptical: “Action, so I really did not want to,” he said in 2015 in an interview with the “Berliner Morgenpost”. “But then you explained to me, you’re only two days in LA and get offered something like that!”

Hans Gruber evil brilliance led Rickman in direct consequence of one of the most famous villains figures of pop culture history: In Kevin Reynolds witty remake of “Robin Hood – Prince of Thieves” in 1991, he played a choleric Sheriff of Nottingham, who fluctuated constantly very delicious and with glowing Wutblick between nervous breakdown and cool cruelty. The then cash magnet and Hollywood beau Kevin Costner played the lead role, but Rickman was the secret star of the blockbuster. As a reward, he was awarded the British Bafta Film Awards, for Best Supporting Actor.

Rickman in Ang Lee’s “Sense and Sensibility”: Romantic Potential

This voice!

Then the way for a great career would actually have been free, especially Rickman little later in Ang Lee’s Austen -Adaption “Sense and Sensibility” and could play his romantic potential. But then British mimes were not as popular as it is today, and Rickman, always humble and in the service of art, decided once for leading self-directed. In 1997, he staged his “Sense and Sensibility” -Partnerin Emma Thompson in the title role, the quiet woman drama “The Winter Guest”.

In the cinema, he remained the significant supporting actor, the other stole again the show if “dogma as indignant Alien actor in Star Trek parody” Galaxy Quest “or sardonic voice of God in Kevin Smith “. Ever: This sonorous and warm nasal, always to the absolute arrogance exactly accent voice! Rickman’s reading of a Shakespeare sonnet, which circulated on YouTube, enticed a Userin to the comment of Rickman’s voice, she received a “OHRgasmus”.

Also colleagues, including Kevin Spacey and Benedict Cumberbatch, made fun of it repeatedly to imitate Rickman. He said 2011, the “SZ”, his voice had always been a problem in the theater: “It is very quiet and is located on a difficult pitch (??) There’s probably some functional defect.” One of his drama teacher had once said that she came from a drainpipe, “the lower end”.

In the cinema, so Rickman, he’s better off. Even if you do not say anything, the camera always start a an emotion, as long as you think the right things.

Probably for this realization generated Rickman his talent, both large and small rolls with ravishing, but never exaggerated grimaces and dramaturgically clever set breaks into unforgettable performances transform. Of course, also included his ravishing as Gothic rock star decked professor Severus Snape in the “Harry Potter” movies: a demonic horror character you graduated nonetheless immediately into the heart.

Fateful scholarship

So was from the former graphic design student and “late bloomer” (interview with the “Gala”, 2006) at the end but still a world star who always thereof dreamed of transforming his apartment into an art gallery. Alan Rickman was born in 1946 in a poor family in the London Borough of Hammersmith, his father, a factory worker, died when Alan was eight years old. His mother sewed car seats to feed him and his four siblings.

The rise of the working class also seemed Rickman initially denied in impermeable class system in Britain. However, a grant secured to the already enthusiastic amateur painter a place on the noble Latymer Upper School, where he was taking acting classes and eventually got access to the first stage appearances. The scholarship he owed “everything,” Rickman of “SZ” said his road to success was still arduous.

From this experience of life drew Rickman perhaps the seriousness with which the “Shakespeare version of Jack Nicholson” (“Süddeutsche Zeitung”) could transform itself grossest roles in subtle, tragicomic character mini-dramas: The best clown always the one who knows the deep sorrow good. Alan Rickman died on Thursday at the age of 69 years of cancer.
