The image is unforgettable. It shows André Glucksmann together with Jean-Paul Sartre and Raymond Aron at the Elysée Palace: They plead with President Giscard d’Estaing for the reception of refugees from Vietnam. The “New philosopher” of the anti-totalitarian Enlightenment had brought together the two great opponent. For Aron Sartre as the humanistic commitment was more important than their political opposites: Since the common school days they were gone out of the way. The emblematic image of their reunion did not survive very long either. In the newspapers it appeared in recent weeks due to current events on again. It reminded the French at a time when they had fewer problems with the refugees. Now André Glucksmann is dead. He died during the night in Paris.

André Glucksmann was born into a Jewish family that had emigrated from Poland to Paris. He was born in 1937, the turmoil and horrors of war shaped his childhood. The father was killed by the Nazis, the mother was in the resistance. “As a radical anti-fascists I was a communist,” said André Glucksmann: “In 1945 I learned with the newspaper of the French Communist Party, which, Humanité ‘, literacy and numeracy. I wanted to know the percentage of votes the party. “

The time was about thirty percent. But with the comrades came Glucksmann already during the Algerian War in conflict. Even the invasion of Hungary he criticized. In 1957, the authentic Prolaterier was excluded. After the completion of studying philosophy he became an assistant of Aron, the only Glucksmann had interested in questions of war and defense. “I was the only one in France that Clausewitz knew. Now we have two “, Raymond Aron reported to have said to him.

The long-term consequences of war

His first book was dedicated to the Vietnam War. Glucksmann defended the thesis that the Americans were able to win their war against a people’s guerrilla impossible. Now Also Jacques Lacan and Jean-Paul Sartre were interested in the young intellectuals. In May ’68, he stood on the barricades, following the uprising he joined the Maoist “Proletarian Left” on.

But as a result the May 68 vanished utopia and revolution from the political horizon. André Glucksmann pleaded for a “morality of urgency”: The humanitarian commitment to all refugees must be a priority, regardless of the ideology, which they are victims. At the starting point of this new imperative of the civil war was in Biafra. And those who had opposed the Vietnam War, had in Gluck’s idea now vouch for the long-term consequences.

A painful error

So began his criticism of totalitarianism, it was reinforced by the shock caused Solzhenitsyn with his “Gulag Archipelago” in France. In his influential writings “The cook and the man-eaters” and “The Master Thinkers” he did research for his roots in German philosophy: Kant, Fichte, Hegel. Later, he fought in “philosophy of deterrence with the German pacifists. The “green peace movement”, he accused of being an ideology, to operate the displacement of the Nazi past and a form of falsification of history. The pacifists he called “Jews of World War III”, which would capitulate in advance of the red totalitarianism. Him had the ex-communist French intellectuals rather abruptly recognized as new danger -. And compensated with his rhetorical combat especially its failings in World War II

September 11 increasingly became the Islam in the role of the new threat. André Glucksmann supported the intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq. Not without reason he was moved to the vicinity of the American neo-conservatives. The fact that he participated in a meeting of Sarkozy in the 2007 election campaign, he has very quickly recognized as a painful mistake. For war against Gaddafi, the Bernard-Henri Lévy staged with Sarkozy, he did not say much. Down are the refugees. It was André Glucksmann is no longer permitted to plead for their inclusion. He died at the age of 78 years.
