Emily Blunt in Sicario: fighting drug smugglers in the cinema – STERN

The drug smuggling on the border between the US and Mexico employs not only the investigators in their everyday work. Many movies already circled to the illegal activities in this region, including about Steven Soderbergh “Traffic – power of the cartel ‘or’ a Time in Mexico” with Antonio Banderas and Johnny Depp. Now, the Canadian director Denis Villeneuve also presents a top-class work on the fight against drug cartels in Mexico.

“Sicario” is a dark thriller, which tells of the work of the CIA. The focus is Emily Blunt. She plays the young FBI agent Kate Macer, the passionate campaigns against drug trafficking and thereby already celebrated first great success. The CIA is aware of the ambitious woman and engaged them for even more explosive investigations – in Mexico the Secret Service wants to smash a notorious cartel.

Director Villeneuve, who previously turned the mystery thriller “Enemy” with Jake Gyllenhaal, is a fight that is basically hopeless. Small and medium-sized intermediaries go to investigators, although every now and then into the net. But on the all-time greats come on hardly. The boundaries between good and evil can Villeneuve blurred here: Agent Kate soon notices that some of their colleagues (including Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin) to play a double game

This insight is not really new – at all disappointed. ” Sicario “over long distances as a rather conventional work narrated. Even performers who like Del Toro or otherwise Brolin quite embody their characters with some intensity, remain pale here. And Emily Blunt succeed at the beginning still with the most impressive scenes, such as when it is discovered a mass grave of drug cartels and it touches visible. But even if it is tempting to have a female protagonist in this male-dominated, so these tough investigator losing format and is used to odd-helpless observer.
