BOY with a new album “We Were Here”: Why did it take so long? – SPIEGEL ONLINE

Boy are the native of Hamburg musician Sonja Glass , 38, and the Swiss singer Valeska Steiner , 29, was in 2011, her single “Little Numbers “for feel-good anthem of the year. Four years after the award-winning debut “Mutual Friends” now appears a new album

SPIEGEL ONLINE:. Our guest critic called your new album “We Were Here” as “classic hate music “because it is so cute, harmless and euphonious. How do you manage to be so sweet? Glass: To be honest I do not know what’s cute in our music. We are not even there with bells and singing nursery rhymes. I harbor a sneaking suspicion that because the contents of the songs too little attention has been paid. In “Fear”, for example, it comes to anxiety, a feeling that drives many people to the edge of their joy. I do not know what’s harmless.

Steiner: There are certainly with us strenuous times and difficult issues, but we have still a fundamentally positive and benevolent view of things and people. I think that helps our self sadder songs, not slipping into tragic, but always to let resonate also something comforting.

SPIEGEL: Is not it sometimes difficult to maintain this balance, especially when you work so closely? Be ye always agree?

Glass: Fortunately, we have a very similar taste or a similar feeling for what we want to convey. Clashes there with us constantly, but mainly substantive in nature: We discuss each chord and each song line. That’s a very, very tiring, but also beautiful collaboration.

SPIEGEL: In the new songs, it seems in many cases to the search for stability in a volatile world to go. A reaction to the surprising glory and the subsequent life on tour?

Steiner: A lot of people ask us if we are not afraid or are unsure, because you do not know if it’s the second album just running good as the first. But the great things that we have experienced so far, all the beauty, can no longer take us so that stays with us, no matter how it goes now, if the concerts are bigger or smaller.

SPIEGEL: In the song “Hit My Heart” ye strange time mentally, because it is about the superficiality of emotional expressions in SMS or chat – all just meaningless exclamation and emoji, no real love?

Steiner: It was such a struggle with this text, because we have really a hard nut our teeth! It was important to us that there is no song with wagging finger and the whole thing is not bigger than it is. There are much bigger problems in the world than that. Still, it’s something that somehow touches us all and had noticed us. But it was difficult to describe such a large, common sense, to impose anything without someone.

SPIEGEL: Is your music a sort of antithesis to this excited spangles and flutter of social media? You remain very faithful to you with your second album, the music will not be more than what it is: very soft and intimate pop music.

Glass: It was actually very important to us and also a reason why we withdrew completely from public life for so long. We wanted to go back into this state, which we had before the first album, when we were working in a very small nucleus to exactly look: What moves us, what interests us, as are our moods

? SPIEGEL: BOY seems already to be a very slow project that takes a lot of time. Before you arguing for hours about individual chords or lines, how does a typical song?

Glass: The music is always there first, then come the texts.

Steiner: I Wear the songs then literally around with me. We live indeed in Hamburg, but I was in between time and again in Zurich for writing. I am working all the time with it, also go out sometimes, meet friends – and then something happens, and I notice that it fits the mood of this or that song. You have to live a little to the music and then see what arises from it.

SPIEGEL: It has been over two years not heard from you, but your autumn tour is almost sold out. How surprising it is that the people have you remained loyal appear over such a long break away is?

Steiner: We had really completely withdrawn and never posted on Facebook a little. Many people have said to us: That you can not do, you are far too long away from the window! To see that there are people who have never even heard a new song and still want to get on the concert, which already makes us very happy.

Glass: It is also an acknowledgment that one’s own pace is the right one. One should free up from the whole frenzy.

SPIEGEL: We now want to still know how to make you really on the palm.

Steiner: On the general, especially in these days: by xenophobic remarks and lack of solidarity with people who come to us because they have to flee their homes. And in private sometimes I’m also angry and argue like me, especially with my closest family. But I’m always in terms of personal things, more relaxed, which is perhaps a little Swiss. I try most quickly find distance, and things that might annoy me, interesting or enlightening to see from a distance in some way.
