Mariss Jansons extended his contract as head of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
By Christian Krügel and Egbert Tholl
For weeks, the music world is looking tensely to Berlin. On Monday, the Philharmonic will vote there who 2018 successor of her boss Simon Rattle. As one of the candidates this was always Mariss Jansons, 72, called, currently head of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Three days before the election the Latvians and the BR have now succeeded in a coup, which is no surprise in the core. But the sensation is the point: Jansons will renew his contract in Munich for three years until 2021. This is a rejection of the Berlin equal – and is also a strong signal to Munich and Bavarian politics: Jansons, who is fighting for another concert hall in Munich for years, will not be Seehofer and State Government from the obligation
<. p> The 72-year-old Latvian, since 2003, the BR Symphony Orchestra. With it, they are among the world leaders of major orchestral works, by numerous tours in the focus of the international music scene. Out of the orchestra so there was for some time the wish that Jansons remained on his contract beyond the end of 2018 in Munich. On Wednesday, the musicians voted about Jansons was thereby confirmed by an overwhelming majority. He had his future last left open, but leave after posting its principal conductor at the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam this spring also hinted that he would like to meet new projects and at the same time more quiet.
Now Jansons and the BR-musicians faster than expected, the future issues resolved – can elect even before the Berlin Philharmonic to have him head. Ironically Jansons was in rehearsals with the Berlin orchestra, which he will conduct on Saturday and Sunday when the BR announced his contract extension on Friday morning. “The musical professionalism and human quality” of the orchestra “are second to none,” Jansons sent word. “This is not only to use but to further promote and to present to the public in Munich, Bavaria and around the world, is to me a labor of love,” said the conductor. BR-Intendant Ulrich Wilhelm called the 72-year-old a “unique artistic personality” and also refers to the economic success “. Under his artistic direction, the number of subscribers has almost tripled” And Orchestra Manager Nikolaus Pont cheers: “We look forward to the continuation of a great artistic partnership.” In fact, Jansons is just at the peak of his career, which concerns the development of his personality and reputation, the power of his interpretations. He pushes the orchestra on his stamp and will at the same time that only the best conductors to work with this. This need not even meet his personal taste. You just have to be good. In this way, he resembles his colleagues Rattle.
It is striking that in the jubilee messages of the BR no mention that certainly could have conveyed his decision some also developing around the heart of the project Jansons. The idea of another concert hall for Munich seemed to be at the end of February. After the events of the past days but is more likely than ever that the project is still realized. Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) on Thursday Prime Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) announced that the city will no longer pursue the idea of a “twin solution” at Gasteig on. The would have provided that the Munich Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestra BR should continue to share a retreaded Philharmonie and Herkulessaal equally as a venue – for Mariss Jansons a terrible idea and a serious cultural policy mistakes, as he stressed repeatedly. Above all, he took Seehofer and Minister of Education Louis Spaenle evil that they did not stand by their promise for an additional, new hall. Jansons felt deceived and humiliated, but announced at that time, to want to continue to fight – not for its own prestige but for the music city of Munich, as he always emphasized
The political path to new concert hall remains engulfed. On the one hand, renewed the government on Thursday after the cancellation rider promptly their pledge: “In any case, the statement is true of the policy statement of the Prime Minister, which in Munich, a new concert hall to be realized.” On the other hand shy Seehofer and his ministers a clear statement that the music store is actually built and largely funded by the Free State. Even the rejection of the “twin solution” they could not bring himself WHETHER riders had to speak a word of power.
Behind probably puts a threefold fear. Firstly, the CSU grandees fear is still resistance to the Münchner million project in the CSU parliamentary group. On the other hand they do not want to be beaten by the international music scene as well as verbally, as happened in the past few weeks due to the Gasteig Plan. And thirdly, they do not want to be drawn into a petty Munich office discussion at the end maybe even a referendum could be. Therefore Spaenle Minister had indeed brought the Olympic Park as a new site this week. Rather than now fighting for research, he puts on a working group to examine – and probably hopes that the initiative comes “from among the citizenry”, as he calls it – whether in the form of pledges or more detailed plans. “Step by Step” should happen, which does not sound like faster solution. But Mariss Jansons will Seehofer, Spaenle and hertreiben their successors now six years in front of him – three years longer than the some might have wished in the government
