Swing legend Hugo Strasser dead – Hamburger Abendblatt

The bandleader and clarinetist died with 93 years. He stood on the stage

Munich to last. Even the funeral of his friend Max Greger last August he had brought his clarinet. Hugo Strasser played live for his companions: “Yesterday” by the Beatles. The 93-year-old had tears in his eyes. Strasser, Greger and 2013 deceased Paul Kuhn were many years traveling as Swing legends.

Strasser was 1922 in Munich born the fifth of six children. His father wanted him to learn the violin. But Strasser had his own head, began a typesetter – and got lead poisoning. In 1937 he began his studies at the Academy of Music in Munich and focused on the clarinet. The training ended after three years: Strasser was drafted. The clarinet rescued him then perhaps life. Among those called up a handful were musicians, they formed a small band. The fell on the captain. “He was excited and said: These five are subject” Strasser said. The other moved to the front, the musicians remained in Stettin, as “auxiliary trainers”.

1955 made Strasser his first dance orchestra. His records sold millions. He was awarded, among others, two gold records, the German Record Prize and the Golden dance shoe.
