“Rock the Kasbah”: killing, deal drugs, laugh – ZEIT ONLINE

This film is worth seeing necessarily because he is playing with a couple of promising characters, it really contains comic scenes, shines with witty dialogue, presents big stars and may even boast a certain anarchic attitude. But unfortunately, unfortunately, this film also has a serious problem screenplay. This affects how a disease that afflicts him roughly in the middle and leaves him in a great first and disintegrate a fairly predictable second part. The disease is called sentimentality, well-meaning sentimentality or even loving smiling, sniffing cinema sympathy. This is a feeling that in this particular genre of war satire really can not be tolerated, especially not when Bill Murray promises to bring the genre again for annealing.

Hollywood looks back on a small but fine tradition. These were partly grandiose films in which America laughed at their own imperialism. They showed absurd encounters with foreign cultures, let’s say, difficult conditions, grotesque, overexcited, incorrectly, as humorous as they aptly. Almost every one of their campaigns, Americans have accompanied with satires. After the Gulf war, these films, however, were not as good, Three Kings or Jarhead or Men who Stare at Goats could not be with the measure classics, with Catch 22 or Mash or Good Morning, Vietnam by Barry Levinson, who now also here, rock the Kasbah, has rotated.

This time sends his Levinson played by Bill Murray hero to Afghanistan. And Kabul is a city which overused the funny bone. There is a curfew, as Richie lance enters the arrival hall of the airport rest, he looks very sinister faces, the hotel does not deserve a star of his, and the strange inhabitants celebrate festivals strange. Richie Lanz is a depressed, unsuccessful, fallen out of time music agent from Van Nuys, California. He takes his lousy singer Ronnie (Zooey Deschanel) in tow. The two thus forming quite the last contingent of the GI troops amusement, a poor karaoke bride and an old dreamer who babbles assume that the rock had changed the world and he, Richie, the rock.

No appearance, nowhere because Ronnie after the first night again settles towards Dubai – and unfortunately also disappears from the film. She leaves her manager back without money or passport. The now has to learn to survive, which occasionally explode goats on the crossroads and where nobody knows after 18 am, who and who is good evil. Kate Hudson as Wunderhure Merci slides in Levinson’s film inside, otherwise rather mundane in barbed-wire Caravan ackernd, but with the heart in the right place. And Richie learns that even if you have already swallowed the middle of nowhere, emerged from somewhere a blonde on.

There are odd birds, who have gathered in Kabul, shoot, deal drugs, drink and do not die the rock ‘n’ roll. Bruce Willis is a mercenary who has written his memoirs and now looking for a publisher, so some of it remains. The funny arms dealer from the bar (Scott Caan, Danny McBride) act “only the good” while the war otherwise is a stage for jokers and the blood flows elsewhere. So it should go on, thinking of the audience, everything should remain an endless series of episodes, scenes and dialogues – in the center of Bill Murray’s face.

Mitch Glazer, writer – if you had just kept quiet! Because at some point begins still a “plot” to: Richie arrives somewhere in a Pashtun village and discovered in a mountain cave, a young girl who can sing like a nightingale. She looks secretly Afghan Star – this is something like Germany Idol – and it is clear what will happen. The road is still long, but clearly visible, it takes a kind Filmvorsehung which distinguishes the poorer Hollywood productions of the better ones. Richie Lanz makes the Small to Star, what else, without chador and with a song of Yusuf which extends as Cat Stevens still deep in Richies Era. The Pashtun girl in TV (Leem Lubany) draws a bit of peace to the ravaged country. Even prostitutes Merci returns to the path of virtue.

About Lived young GIs in Vietnam once with sarcasm and loud music, here turns Barry Levinson button softly. The war has become a different, so are the United States and the Pop. The great American promise ends in Kabul as kitschy fairy tales, it has had its dramatic and not even is convincing as retro. Even the protagonist seems to get bored in this harmless story. Bill Murray’s Smoke On The Water in front of the Pashtuns is to Fremdschämen bad. As a seems to want to go home.

Of course, this film criticism exaggerates at this point. Even the sentimental second part can be regarded. Kate Hudson and Leem Lubany compensate for shallow salvation doctrine that salvation is only obtained in popular culture. Bill Murray remains chic, even if he has to quote his play even over distances. Barry Levinson has yet to even think about errors in the script and on the question of whether really any good idea from earlier recyclable.
