He was a chronicler of the Franco era and the Spanish Civil War;! his novels “The Long March” or “The case of Madrid” have become classics. And he was the incorruptible biographer and one of the sharpest critics of his country in times of democracy: Rafael Chirbes, famous for its meandering style of speech, wrote about awakening and adaptation, rebellion and stagnation as in “old friends”, most recently through the distortions of capitalism and neoliberalism.

A pessimist, a Marxist, one who never tired to revolt: In his recent works, “Crematorium” or “On the banks”, he took the eyesores, the tourism industry, the real estate bubble and the crisis profiteers Spain before. A man of exceptional moral integrity called him his publisher Jorge Herralde. On Saturday’s Rafael Chirbes whose books have been published in German in Munich publishing Kunstmann, died at 66 years, at home near Valencia. He had lung cancer. The death of the award-winning author was a heavy blow for the Spanish literature, Herralde said the newspaper “El Pais”. His latest book, “Paris, Austerlitz,” Chirbes could just finish, it should come out shortly in Spanish. TSP / EPD
