Music movie – “That was crass!” – Süddeutsche.de

As the rapper Dr. Dre and Ice Cube in the film “Straight Outta Compton historicize” itself.

A bizarre idea: Ten speakers are at the dubbing studio and transferred the dialogues of “Straight Outta Compton” into German, or half German, or how to call it: “Yo, was’n going, nigger?”

We are in a scene in which the three most famous players of the rap crew NWA – Ice Cube, Eazy-E and Dr. Dre – for the first time standing together in the studio. Dr. Dre says to Eazy-E: “Why kickst’n you not really the shit?”, Which is meant: Why do not you rap sometimes? Eazy-E will actually be only as a financier, one with the money he has managed to set aside as a drug dealer. For him, gangsta rap is an investment. Nevertheless, he was raised in the cabin. He does not have a sense of rhythm, but Dr. Dre, it brings with him. A few settings later, he has tasted blood: “Hey, Dre, that was about crass, that was Dope

Yes, you get in the dubbed version of “Straight Outta Compton” actually exactly this ghastly mixture of unübersetzbarem and therefore in the English original pristine rap slang and German. The latter is a mixture of contemporary and very oblique yesterday force language. At one point actually says someone “Wich stylus”.

For those interested in the history of gangsta rap or the early days of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, for the cult worshiped, 1995 by the consequences AIDS deceased Eazy-E, or in general for the south of Los Angeles in the years before the Rodney King riots, so the original version must see. Here you can hear juggle any white voice actors with the N-word, and otherwise is “Straight Outta Compton” then quite entertaining and instructive. What the director F. Gary Gray on a good way, is the portrayal of violence. How it arises, as it provokes counter-violence. The key scene in 1988: NWA have with the white board manager Jerry Heller, wearing velvet jogging suits (ie very abgehalftert is), found someone who believes in them. During the recording of the debut album “Straight Outta Compton” make before break Studio. Prompt drives a police car in front, a black official orders all to lie down on the asphalt, a white officer looks on. Only Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti) can persuade the police to let the rapper. In parting insults Ice Cube (great: Ice Cubes 24-year-old son O’Shea Jackson Jr.) desolate black officials. The answers: “Go back inside to your Massa!” White against Black. Black against Black. All against all: This is the main thrust of the film. Given the “Black Lives Matter” movement – a campaign after the deaths of blacks by police violence – it acts spooky date. “Straight Outta Compton” shows as well as NWA in response to harassment mentioned her hit “Fuck tha Police” write. The song is not a call to violence, but a panorama of social criticism. Among other things, with the line “Black Police showing out for the white cop”, saying Black policemen grab particularly hard in the presence of white superior

To her “to please slaveholders’. Another form of violence saves “Straight Outta Compton” however completely from: the against women. It gave the US an average scandal surrounding the film, because it implies having no adjustment that Dr. Dre has attacked in 1991 at a party, the TV presenter Dee Barnes and therefore was on trial. Barnes answered with a text with Gawker to word, Dr. Dre apologized in the New York Times in all women, whom he had “hurt” as a young drunk man. That none of this happens in “Straight Outta Compton”, on the one hand is not surprising: Ice Cube and Dr. Dre have the film co-produced, so they work with their own money on the historicizing of their biographies. When Dr. Dre wants to continue to successfully sell “Beats by Dre” headphones, it may on the canvas mistreat no women.

On the other hand is this omission in direct conflict with the credo “art only reflects the reality” , with the NWA previously always defended themselves against accusations of glorifying violence in their music. “Keep it real” since the claim was all gangsta rapper. “Straight Outta Compton” is not quite “real”.
