Man Booker Prize: Marlon James Award for Bob Marley Book – SPIEGEL ONLINE

The Man Booker Prize has been awarded for the first time to an author from Jamaica: Marlon James is honored this year with the prestigious British literary award, as the jury announced in London on Wednesday night. So you draws his 686-page book “A Brief History of Seven Killings” from, translated: A Brief History of seven killings.

It’s about a gang of street kids, their cocaine use, their weapons – and their failed assassination attempt on Bob Marley in Jamaica’s capital Kingston in 1976. In fact, there had been an attempt on Marley in December of the year: The musician was doing slightly injured and has been able to occur a few days later at a peace concert.

It is not an easy read, said jury member Michael Wood about the novel. But the work remained always exciting, “and the second time reading it just got better.” The decision to award the prize had fallen unanimously after about two hours of deliberation.

“A Brief History of Seven Killings” is the third novel by James, a German version does not yet exist. The 44-year-old author came to Kingston to the world and currently lives in Minneapolis in the US. The award was presented to him in London, presented by Duchess Camilla, wife of Prince Charles.

The award is worth 50,000 pounds, converted 67,000 euros. He goes to novelists who write in English, and their work has been published in the UK. . The award has been awarded since 1969, since last year it is open to authors of all nationalities
