New album of Pet Shop Boys: Return to the Club – Tagesspiegel

What a visionary board! Nagging pop hits razor sharp electronics. Beat cascades, Synth Strings, Hooligan thunder and testosterone Theater. All this was to “Please”, the debut album of Pet Shop Boys. It appeared in March 1986 and was the overture of an impressive work canon.

30 years later, the British pop duo is now bringing out his 13th studio disc. Less visions more zeitgeist, all “super”. The promises of the title and bringing the go-ahead to the point of euphoria that pervades the twelve songs. Or rather: Tracks. Because there are pieces that Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have come up with. It’s become very danceable puppet theater, the producer Stuart Price two men tailors to the 60 on the body, which would of course never persuade. No choreography, zero sex appeal, this has always been the credo of the Pet Shop Boys. Now it helps to hide the possible arthritis

“Super” is a constant drumbeat. The album starts out loud and listen to loud, there are many ideas by the fact here a bit Raggaton ( “Twentysomething”), since a bite EDM Donner ( “Inner Sanctum”), and it floats Tennant’s ethereal voice. An overarching concept as recently with “Yes” (2009) or “Electric” (2013) are nowhere.

In a remix of the Pet Shop Boys- hit “Can You Forgive Her?” Reduced the producer Rollo 1993 complex text to lies, deceit and Schummelsex on the line: “Dance-dance-dance to disco”. This corresponds almost exactly to the movement pattern of the current board – and also the lyrical level. Tennant touched situations and moods, the disco “burns down”, young men pull out their smartphones, that’s it. He paints this time no opulent images in which roam protagonists by Roman moon nights or ponder Marx. On “Super” is all one size smaller and crisper therefore: superplakativ just

No Pops moments.? Oh yes, for the first single “The Pop Kids” Tennant and Lowe have again started up their story machine. They tell of two teenagers who are drawn in the nineties of the Province to London, of course, the songs on the radio because, because of longing and life-affirming pop music, and because it has been issued to many people as well, combines this song fans from Yorkshire, Upstate New York and East Westphalia which just 1995 otherwise on the dance floor thought as:. “I am never going home”

discoveries and disappointments are balanced

that’s great pop theater , a commitment to life, to music, to their own history, their further-Next Drang as the hits from Mel & amp; Kim a bit ago. Just like the blockbuster time the Pet Shop Boys. Who knows even the great Singles “Vocal” or “Thursday” from the last album? Commercially no comparison to previous successes, the imperial phase, as a hit followed the other, “It’s A Sin”, “What Have I Done To Deserve this?”, “Always On My Mind” – bang, bang, bang. ” / p>

the less success, the greater is obviously the admiration by the criticism. Also for “Super” there were some very friendly meetings, about the British “Q Magazine” or “Spiegel Online”. It is exactly the reaction that has the duo once described in one of his best unknown songs “Friendly Fire”: “Now my status is ill-defined / As an icon I’m inclined / To be coming under friendly fire.” After all, who over three decades makes high-quality, technically advanced music, which one dares to no misstep. And it’s also not become, discoveries and disappointments are balanced. Only the curious look into the future, once shaped “Please” is no longer to be found on “Super”.

For the first time

run the Pet Shop Boys others behind this plate often sounds like the nineties when techno was still in its infancy and some sounds hollow rattled like in the funny Schunkel title “Pazzo!”. Or the Boys turn right on with high pitched vocals ( “Happiness”) and dirty Bamm-bam-bam ( “Burn”).

This whole Stampfer, this click-clack rhythms and over-the-top – beats – somehow steals a feeling that two London want propositions the boys and girls. At the mid-twenties, the endless vertanzen your weekend in clubs. At the stroboscopic Raver, fritter away their money for cheap drugs and expensive vodka. Therefore, the panel also acts Fanperspektive bit desperate. For the first time the Pet Shop Boys chase after other, the DJ at Berghain, the Charttoppern the EDM scene, and none of these camps is probably one of the tracks ever play. This is sad, very sad even.

“Super” is the dance panel for those who go do not dance much. Or no longer have the energy for it. The Pop Kids back then are now sitting in paneled offices, drinking Chardonnay for dinner and falsify their age in Grinder. But while they do, they feel completely: super
